Pierre Boulle’s famous novel, Monkey Planet, gave rise to a franchise that just would not go away – spawning Planet of the Apes, its theatrical sequels and the Tim Burton remake [and a related videogame]; a live-action, primetime TV series and an animated Saturday morning series. So, why on earth would anyone think yet another attempt to make something out of the concept would be a good idea?
Unlikely as it seems, the trailer for Rise of the Planet of the Apes actually looks pretty good – intriguing, even – and sufficiently different to be worth a look.

It appears that 20th Century Fox has selected Noam Murro to direct Die Hard 5. According to both deadline.com and The Hollywood Reporter, Murro has been chosen to direct from a script by Skip Woods.
And who the heck is Noam Murro [I hear you ask]? Well, Murro has garnered five DGA nominations for commercials – impressing with the recent spectacular campaign for the Halo videogame – and took two Golden Lions at Cannes. He also directed Smart People [starring Dennis Quaid, Sarah Jessica Parker and Ellen Page] for Miramax.
Since Bruce Willis has expressed interest in playing John McClane one more time – and considering his terrific performance in last year’s RED – and woods has done a few interesting scripts [Thursday, Hitman], I’m thinking that a fifth Die Hard movie might just be a good idea.

Michael Fassbender has signed on to play an android character in Ridley Scott’s Prometheus – the film that has arisen from the ashes of Scott’s aborted Alien prequel – for which Fassbender was being considered.
The 20th Century Fox project also stars Noomi Rapace – who gave Lizbeth Salander life in the trilogy based on Stieg Larssen’s Millenium books.
So, if Fassbender is playing an alien, does that make Rapace the next Ripley? She’s got the chops – and the presence – to pull it off. Suddenly I’m very interested in Prometheus.

If you love exploitation flicks, there’s a very good chance you’ll revel in Machete. It’s got an iconic hero, gunfights, fist fights, sword fights, missiles, Gatling guns, some very impressive lo-riders, evil villains, hot women and more blood guts and veins in one’s teeth than any movie in recent memory – at least one that wasn’t a pointless horror/slasher flick with no plot.
Grade: B+
