Television: Eclipse Looks Back At Supernatural As The Season 6 Premiere Approaches

The premiere of the sixth season of the CW Network’s hit action/horror series, Supernatural is just a few days away and I don’t know about anyone else, but this dedicated viewer is psyched about it! With the premiere of season 6, Supernatural is moving to its new Friday night 9 PM (EST) slot where the Winchester brothers will be buddies once more with the CW Network’s other long running action series, Smallville.

Supernatural season 5 was the culmination of a storyline that had began in season one under show runner/series creator, Eric Kripke. From the very first moment the audience was introduced to Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam (Jared Padalecki) Winchester, we knew they were fated for something bigger than either one of them could imagine. Over the past five seasons of Supernatural the audience has become invested in the way the Winchester brothers seem to rise above just about every adversity thrown at them and our hearts broke for them when they couldn’t. When Dean’s deal was closing in on him in season 3 of Supernatural, I found the lines from one of my favorite songs running through my head. They are part of the lyrics to ‘Comanche’ by Johnny Horton. Ok, so yes, Comanche was a horse. But not just any horse, he was the lone survivor of Custer’s last stand at Little Bighorn. I have since found the lyrics to be fitting for both Dean and Sam.

“Comanche you fought hard, Comanche you tried. You were a good soldier, so hold your head up high for even the greatest soldiers sometimes must fall. Comanche the great horse, you gave your all.”

Both Sam and Dean Winchester were called upon time and time again by angels, demons, God and even their own father, John Winchester (Jeffrey Dean Morgan/Matt Cohen) to ‘give their all’. Even above and beyond death.

Of course none of this would have had the dramatic impact for Supernatural viewers and fans without the talents of the writers, producers, creators, guest actors and most of all without the talent and on screen brotherly chemistry of Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles.

Television: Apocalypse Why? Commentary On Supernatural S5.21 Two Minutes to Midnight

“Two Minutes to Midnight” – Bobby (Jim Beaver) sells his soul to help stop the Apocalypse and Dean (Jensen Ackles) goes head-to-head with Death.

That short blurb made it all sound so exciting as Supernatural season 5 came down to one of it’s two last episodes, S5.21 Two Minutes to Midnight. The airing of the episode left this viewer wondering what the heck happened to all the excitement you usually get when the storyline revolves around the coming of a possible apocalypse of Biblical proclamations. Lucifer is loose on the world, the Four Horsemen of Apocalypse are set up to be a major ‘big bad’ to over come and Supernatural season 5 started out full steam into that potential. Yet to this viewer what started out like a scary ride on a rocket, seems to be ending up like a tame ride on the merry-go-round.

Television: Hungry Heart Gets a New Meaning – Commentary on Supernatural S5.14 My Bloody Valentine

Breaking News: The CW has announced today (2.16.10) that the hit series Supernatural starring Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins has been given an early renewal for a a 6th season. However the good news for fans and viewers of the show has been tempered by information coming out that series creator Eric Kripke is stepping down from his duties as show-runner on a day-to-day basis in season 6. Those duties will be turned over to executive producer Sera Gamble. Gamble has been with Supernatural since season 1, coming on board first as a writer than taking on executive producer duties as the seasons progressed. Kripke along with Robert Singer will both continue on with the series in their roles of Executive Producers and will still have a hand in the direction of the series. Word also has it that Kripke will also be using his time to work on a new project for Warner Brothers.

“Cupid, draw back you bow and let your arrow go straight to my lover’s heart for me.”

That’s a line from a very popular Valentine’s Day themed love song, but in Supernatural S.14 My Bloody Valentine (written by Ben Edlund and directed by Mike Rohl), it seems to have a very sinister and deadly consequence. Or does it? That’s what Sam (Jared Padalecki –who is getting married in two weeks to the lovely Genevieve Cortese aka Ruby 2.0) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester are at first led to believe by the Angel Castiel (Misha Collins) who is convince a Cupid (Lex Medlin, whom I have to say is one confident man) has gone rogue and is killing the lovers it first unites. Castiel tells them that a cupid is actually a lower level cherub and not incontinent. Nor, as we find out are they “little dudes with wings and a diaper”. The one in is this episode is a full grown, robust looking man with the gentle playfulness of an over eager puppy. It becomes apparent to both Winchesters and to Castiel that the whimsical cupid is not the one setting lovers up for the kill and they also quickly discover that it isn’t just hungry hearts that are dying, other people with other hungers are falling victim as well.

Television: Sam & Dean Winchester "Meet The Parents" In Supernatural S5.13 The Song Remains The Same

With Sweeps Weeks going on and every television network looking to gain even more viewing audiences for their shows, The CW Network and Warner Brothers gave select members of the online press a chance to have an advance viewing of this week’s new episode of the hit series, Supernatural to generate some Sweeps Week buzz about it. After taking advantage of that opportunity to see Supernatural S5.13 The Song Remains the Same, all this reviewer can say about it is WOW!!

Ok, there is more to say than just that. Check out this synopsis to see what I mean.

When angel ally Anna (guest star Julie McNiven) escapes her captors in Heaven she contacts  Castiel (Misha Collins) in an effort to find Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles), but Castiel is suspicious of her motives.  He soon learns that the former ally has gone back in time in a “Terminator”-like plan to stop the Apocalypse by killing John (Matt Cohen) & Mary (Amy Gumenick) Winchester before their son’s are ever born, thus ending the possibility of the brothers becoming vessels for Lucifer and Michael.  Steve Boyum directed the episode written by Sera Gamble and Nancy Weiner.

TV Recap: Curiously Entertaining- A Commentary on Supernatural S5.7 The Curious Case of Dean Winchester

Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) discover a he-witch (guest star Hal Ozsan) is running a high-stakes poker game where the currency is life years instead of money. Bobby (Jim Beaver) sees the game as a chance to get out of the wheelchair and bets 25 years, but loses. As Bobby begins to age rapidly, Dean steps in to save him but also ends up turning into an old man, leaving Sam holding the bag for their survival. Robert Singer directed the episode with teleplay by Sera Gamble and story by Sera Gamble & Jenny Klein.

I’ll admit right now I went into watching The Curious Case of Dean Winchester with a large grain of trepidation. Not because of the plot line though, because I was fairly certain that Sera Gamble as one of Supernatural’s veteran writers would be able to create a credible storyline around the premise of a he-witch with the powers to give to or take years from a person’s life. What I had the trepidation about was knowing that instead of putting the highly talented Jensen Ackles through the aging process via special effects make up, the studio had chosen to send out a casting call for an older actor to play the part of seventy-some year old Dean Winchester.

The way I saw this,we had a fifty-fifty chance of the casting director making a brilliant choice such as was made when young Ridge Canipe was chosen, not once but twice to portray a younger version of Dean Winchester (most notable as 12 year old Dean in Supernatural S3.08 A Very Supernatural Christmas), or what was in my opinion an unmitigated disaster in the choice of casting Brock Kelly to play eighteen year old Dean Winchester in Supernatural S4.13 episode After School Special.

Television: Good God Ya’ll – That’s Almost Perfect: A Commentary on Supernatural 5.02

Before we go into the thoughts and commentary on Supernatural 5.02 Good God Ya’ll, let’s take a moment to see what fandom was up to and what the CW Network has to celebrate about.

Now in its fifth season, supernatural continues to build, improving over its year ago performance by +18% in adults 18-34 (1.3/4), 55% in women 18-34 (1.7/5), +17% in women 18-49 (1.4/4). In its Thursday night 9:00PM timeslot, the veteran action series held 100% of its women 18-34 (1.7/5) premiere audience, matching the show’s best performance in that demo since January 2009. In adults 18-34, SUPERNATURAL held 93% of its 9/10/09 season 5 premiere audience. Together with its new lead in show The Vampire Diaries, Supernatural helped deliver the network’s second best Thursday ever with women 18-34 (2.2/7), behind only last week, according to Live Plus Same Day Nielsen ratings for Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009. The combination of these two series have improved The CW’s Thursday performance versus a year ago by 47% in women 18-34 (2.2/7) and 6% in women 18-49 (1.8/5).

Over on Twitter, Supernatural actor Misha Collins and his minions mounted an offensive against last week’s run in with Rapper P. Diddy. As you recall in last week’s reporting here at EM, P. Diddy mistook the #luciferiscoming tag as some sort of satanic uprising and had the execs at Twitter ban the hashtag from the trending topic where it had made it all the way to the #1 spot. Needless to say a majority of vocal Supernatural fans and actor Misha Collins were not amused at this and in promotion for 5.02 they launched the #pdiddiyisscaredofhistv hashtag campaign. Shortly after the launch of the campaign on Thursday September 17th, Misha Collins posted the following on his twitter:

“THIS IS A VICTORY! Just 1 hour after deployment, #pdiddyisscaredofhistv was blocked. Clearly we’ve struck fear into the heart of Mr Twitter

Is any of this Twitterverse campaigning having an affect on increasing the popularity of Supernatural and bringing attention to the series in a positive way or is it, as some fans are beginning to voice, something that is only making the fandom look a bit like unreasonable radicals? Television: Here’s the Way I Saw It – Commentary on Supernatural S5.01 Sympathy for the Devil

Before we go into commentary on the episode, let’s share a bit of news that has the CW Network dancing in the aisle!

In a press release on 8/11/09 the CW announced that SUPERNATURAL Improved Over Last Year’s Season Premiere with Young Women. and SUPERNATURAL improved over its strong premiere last year by 6% in women 18-34 (1.7/5).  SUPERNATURAL, which scored a 3.39m rating for its season 5 premiere, also scored its best women 18-34 (1.7/5) and women 18-49 (1.7/5) ratings since Jan. 2009. THE VAMPIRE DIARIES and SUPERNATURAL Combine for CW’s Best Thursday Ever with Women. Best Thursday in 2 ½ Years with Adults 18-34

This news was no doubt music to the ears of the series creator Eric Kripke along with writers, producers and studio executives who attended Thursday night’s gala Supernatural premiere party in Los Angeles. Also in attendance were such notable actors from the series as Traci Dinwiddie (psychic Pamela Barnes) and Julie McNiven (the Angel Anna).  This all came on the heels of one of the biggest combined fan publicity pushes for the long running CW series about two brothers named Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam (Jared Padalecki) Winchester who roam the back roads of rural USA in a weapon’s loaded black ’67 Chevy Impala hunting creatures of a supernatural origin and saving people.

Fans of the quirky series literally took over the twitterverse using hashtags to promote the series with such tags as #inkripkewetrust, #supernaturaliscoming and the controversial #luciferiscoming: which eventually caused an uproar among a religious group led by rapper P. Diddy (who has since been challenged by Supernatural star Misha Collins to a rather strange competition involving eating cupcakes while riding horseback). This massive push by fans to promote the show garnered a lot of buzz and attention among many people who are active on Twitter and no doubt brought more attention to the premiere. It also goes to prove a personal point of my own, which is that scattering things on numerous LJ’s doesn’t have the kind of impact of fan based promotion for the show as it does when fans and viewers come together in one central location, easily accessible by other fans, media and those involved directly with Supernatural. When everyone comes together on one place, it creates a more cohesive force and gets more voices of support heard.

And speaking of cohesion, now I’m going to be moving on to my commentary about the Supernatural season 5.01 episode, Sympathy for the Devil.
