The name Neil Gaiman is synonymous with great storytelling – from his iconic Sandman comics to children’s tales with an edge [Coraline] and expansive fantasy worlds like those of American Gods and Anansi Boys. Now SFX Weekly is reporting that he has confirmed that an episode of Doctor Who will be only his third television credit [he wrote Day of the Dead for Babylon 5 and co-wrote the BBC mini-series, Neverwhere].
Gaiman’s Doctor Who ep will appear in Matt Smith’s second season as The Doctor. On the subject of his Whovian script, Gaiman said, “As anyone who’s read my blog knows, I’m a big fan of a certain long-running British SF TV series. One that started watching — from behind the sofa — when I was three. And while I know it’s cruel to make you wait for things, in about 14 months from now, which is to say, NOT in the upcoming season but early in the one after that, it’s quite possible that I might have written an episode. And if I had, it would originally have been called “The House of Nothing”. But it definitely isn’t called that any more.
Countdown. You’ve got about 14 months.”

Ever since it was announced that David Tennant’s run as the Tenth Doctor was announced – and that he would only be doing as series of five one-hour specials in lieu of a final full season – it seems like the world’s Whovians have gone into a kind of premature mourning. Given that the five specials were described as being individual adventures that would also provide a throughline up to the Tenth Doctor’s death and regeneration – and that photos of the Eleventh Doctor looked unusually odd – I guess that was not exactly unexpected.

The BBC today announced the identity of the eleventh actor to carry on as Doctor Who’s title character, The Doctor. Their choice, made public by Who Executive Producer Piers Wenger, is the twenty-six year old Matt Smith.
Smith has appeared in the two Sally Lockhart mysteries The Ruby in the Smoke and The Shadow in the North, which starred former Who companion Billy Piper in the title role. He got the role of The Doctor because, as Wenger puts it, “It was abundantly clear that he had that ‘Doctor-ness’ about him. You are either the Doctor or you are not.”
Smith begins shooting for the next season of Doctor Who later this spring. The final special being shot with David Tennant is expected to air in early 2010 – to be followed later in the year by Smith’s debut in the role.
