CinemaCon 2011 Day 1

I’m in Las Vegas this week attending The Official Convention of The National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO), also known as CinemaCon. This is a week when Hollywood comes together with Theater owners to pat each other on the back and say “Job well done…” We also get a glance at what new technology and concepts will be making it to our local Cinemas in the next year. The exhibit floor opens today. Last night Paramount Pictures brought the stars out for a two-hour presentation of new footage from some of the hot upcoming releases. Due to embargo rules I can’t talk about much of what I saw. The two “watch” phrases of the night were “it’s a rough cut,” and “thank you Celine for letting us use the house that you built for the week…”

The Death of Spider-Man

I absolutely loathe stunts and events in comics, it’s why I stopped collecting them over 20 years ago. Listening to Comic Book podcasts over the last few years and stumbling upon Ultimate Spider-Man has restarted my love of comic books. A few years ago Marvel shocked the world by killing Captain America, this year DC killed off Bruce Wayne and brought him back almost the exact same way Marvel brought Captain America back.  Now the folks at Marvel are going to kill off the only decent character they really have and that’s Ultimate Spider-Man!  I do not acknowledge the travesty that is Brand New Day Spider-Man (shudders). If they killed him off, I’d scream with joy. But no, they are going to kill off the Spider-Man that I love! Of course they’ll bring him back a year later (in time for the movie reboot) – he’ll probably be lost in time as well.  The prelude starts in 153 – what is with this retarded numbering system!? Ultimate Spider-Man went to issue 133 (I believe) then the numbering restarted to issue #1, I’m on issue 15 and now they are going back to 153? WTH????   Anyway, I despise this stupid idea!  The story is being written by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Millar (whose writing I generally loathe). This arc starts in February. Is there any point in me continuing my Ultimate Spider-Man Subscription? If I was a conspiracy buff I’d say Marvel is doing this because the quality of Ultimate Spider-Man consistently blows away BND Spidey! Full Press Release after the break.

Wolverine_01_Cover

Although I don’t buy as many comics as I used, I still have a sentimental attachment to Wolverine and his funky mask [that mirrors his hairdo!] and those wicked cool claws. So, when a first look at something called Wolverine Goes to Hell popped up in my inbox, I knew I had to share.

More preview covers and pages [and release info] follows the jump.

The Amazing Spiderman is going to go through some major changes in the fall and rumor has it Peter Parker may not be around by the end of the year. Here is your first look at Amazing Spider-Man #642, from superstar writer Mark Waid and fan-favorite artist Paul Azaceta! Origin Of The Species starts here! The birth of Norman Osborn’s son ignites a fire in the supervillain community and everyone is on the hunt for the new strain of Goblin blood. Spider-Man must keep the child out of the hands of the world’s most powerful villains, but at what cost? With Mary Jane back in Peter’s life and the most dangerous mission he has ever faced in front of him, Spidey stands to lose everything. Discover the Origin Of The Species in Amazing Spider-Man #642! I have to say, while I’m still excited for the story, the artwork in this preview looks horrible an enough with Peter whining about money. Feel like I’ve been reading about his money trouble for 20 years! Take a gander after the break.

PIRATES

While Eclipsemagazine still has plenty more goodies to share with readers from our adventures at the 2010 San Diego Comic Con, I think it’s only fitting that we take a nostalgic look back at all the wonders the 4 day event had to share with us while we were there.

The San Diego Comic Con has a multitude of things to offer that cater to many different interests, be it comic books which were the original focus of the event when it first began, to action/adventure/Scifi movies, TV shows, collectibles, gaming, costuming or just getting to meet a favorite actor/writer/producer/artist.

“I got my picture taken with Bruce Greenwood!!!!!”

Oh sorry, I digressed  there for a moment. Now that I’m back on track again, let’s take a look at some of the things that Comic Con had to offer a roving reporter wandering down the hallways and through the exhibit hall.

Eclipse Magazine was on hand at the press panel for the latest release in the Warner Brothers line of animated Batman movies, Batman: Under the Red Hood. Your roving Eclipse reporter had a chance to speak with the writers, producers, directors and voice talent Bruce Greenwood to get the inside scoop on this exciting new installment of the Batman legacy.

Batman: Under the Red Hood is an upcoming direct-to-video animated film based on the Batman storylines “Under the Hood” and “A Death in the Family“. The film is the eighth in the DC Universe Animated Original Movies line released by Warner Premiere and Warner Bros. Animation. It is set to be released on July 27, 2010. The film stars Bruce Greenwood as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Jensen Ackles as the Red Hood.

In this this teaser video, Bruce Greenwood who plays Batman/Bruce Wayne talks to reporters about his take on bringing this iconic character to life and jokes with me about video taping him during the talk.
