Annie is a reimagining of the Broadway musical-turned-movie based on the classic comic strip Little Orphan Annie. It’s the story of an orphan who becomes the adopted daughter of an unscrupulous, wealthy man who straightens up and flies right because of her.
In the comic strip and musical, the wealthy man was billionaire Daddy Warbucks – so named because he made his fortune selling arms to all buyers. While war profiteers will always be with us, here he’s a telecommunications mogul named Will Stacks (Jamie Foxx). Annie is played by Oscar®-nominee Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild).

As part of the run up to the release of Annie, Sony Pictures Entertainment has become involved in helping support Turnaround Arts – a feature program of the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities. Turnaround Arts helps provide arts resources to high-poverty schools which, in turn, helps those schools to keep up attendance and maintain the sir students’ interest in furthering their education.
As part of their collaboration, Sony is providing support and resources for schools whose students are putting on their own productions of the Broadway classic. Annie’s stars, Jamie Foxx and Quvenzhané Wallis visited one such school, Northport Elementary, where Wallis said, “I was excited to visit the school today. We had so much fun and I’m glad that they are preparing for their own production of Annie. Every Annie can be different, which is one of the reasons why it is so great to be a part of.”

Although this is the second invasion of the White House of the year, it’s bigger, louder and, paradoxically, safer – thanks to its PG-13 rating – than Olympus Has Fallen. Also, it has an outstanding cast supporting an equally excellent core of stars who appear to be having the times of their lives. It takes the basic idea of bad guys invading the White House for nefarious purposes and then spins out all kinds of fun sub-plots.

We all know that Quentin Tarantino is an audacious filmmaker. If there’s a genre of filmmaking that he loves, he will produce his take on it at some point – and he really, really loves spaghetti westerns. For his version of a spaghetti western, though, he doesn’t just explode the conventions of the genre – he does for slavery what he did for World War II in Inglourious Basterds. The result is seriously bloody fun.
