On Director Hayao Miyazaki’s Birthday, and in celebration of its 20th Anniversary, GKIDS and Fathom Events Present the Japanese Animated Feature and Exclusive Music Video in Theaters Nationwide Early 2017 – January 5th (in dubbed English) and January 9th (in original Japanese with English subtitles)

On behalf of GKIDS, we are elated to announce the studio’s next partnership with Fathom Events to bring PRINCESS MONONOKE, the classic animated film from groundbreaking writer/director Hayao Miyazaki and the legendary Studio Ghibli, to U.S. theaters for two days only: Thursday, January 5th at 7PM and Monday, January 9th at 7PM (local time both dates).

The English-dubbed version features the vocal talents of: Gillian Anderson, Billy Crudup, Claire Danes, Minnie Driver, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Billy Bob Thornton.

“Twenty years after its release, ‘Princess Mononoke’ remains an undisputed animated triumph and one of the most thrilling adventures ever produced,” said GKIDS’ President Eric Beckman. “Following the great success of ‘Spirited Away’ [the first day of Spirited Away’s limited showing grossed over $800K] returning to theaters, we are excited to present ‘Princess Mononoke’ in a theatrical setting to fans both old and new. It’s also a fitting way to celebrate Miyazaki’s birthday as we remind ourselves of the cinematic gifts he has given audiences over the years.”

In addition to the feature content, movie audiences will view the never-before-released in North America 1995 Miyazaki-directed music video by the Japanese rock duo Chage & Aska for their song “On Your Mark.”

In Theaters Two Days Only: January 5th & January 9th

Princess Mononoke is a landmark of animation and a film of unsurpassed power and beauty. An epic story of conflict between humans, gods, and nature, the film has been universally acclaimed by critics and broke box office records on its original release in Japan.

While defending his village from a demonic boar-god, the young warrior Ashitaka becomes afflicted with a curse that grants him super-human power in battle but will eventually take his life. Traveling west to find a cure or meet his destiny, he journeys deep into sacred depths of the Great Forest where he meets San (Princess Mononoke), a girl raised by wolf-gods who is waging battle against the human outpost of Iron Town, on the edge of the forest. The girl Mononoke is a force of nature – with blood smeared lips, riding bareback on a great white wolf, doing battle with both gods and humans, she is as iconic a figure as any from film, literature, or opera.
