I’m vindicated! The New York Times has an article today about how AT&T may have “fixed,” this year’s American Idol Voting by holding special events and providing free texting services for Kris Allen in Arkansas. There were rumors floating around that for such a small state Arkansas really “represented,” during the final voting. Now we know why, AT&T was behind it. Here’s the key passage from the article:
“Representatives of AT&T helped fans of Mr. Allen at the two Arkansas events by providing instructions on how to send 10 or more text messages at the press of a single button, known as power texts. Power texts have an exponentially greater effect on voting than do single text messages or calls to the show’s toll-free phone lines. The efforts appear to run afoul of “American Idol” voting rules in two ways. The show broadcasts an on-screen statement at the end of each episode warning that blocks of votes cast using “technical enhancements” that unfairly influence the outcome of voting can be thrown out.” This service wasn’t provided to Lambert fans.
I never watch recap shows and I kept that trend up for the finale. I watched Veronica Mars, played some Rockband Classic Rock (pretty nice set list), read a bit of the how to develop for Twitter book and sat in my Jacuzzi for a good 30 minutes, anything other than watching that 2 hour trainwreck. I have to say, I was surprised at the choice in Idol Winners, I was going to make you click the read more button to find out, but what’s the point, I’m sure you know already – KRIS ALLEN is your new American Idol! It’s pretty amazing that he won, he was this year’s Jason Mraz had the weakest voice of everyone, no personality, bland, predictable, but I have to admire him he stuck it out. I think maybe the judges constant pimping of Lambert and Gokey since week 17 finally turned off enough voters.
This choice is as much a repudiation of the Judges manipulations (especially Simon Cowell’s constant begging people to vote for Adam) this season than an affirmation of Allen. The folks over at Vote for the Worst are trying to claim credit, but it’s complete BS, because they didn’t make Allen their pick until the top 2. I think Adam got a little cocky in the last few weeks which ended in his off performance last night. But the Judges can take heart because they did get Adam to the Finale. I’m a little sad, because it would have been fun to have him be the first open, and I mean OPEN gay American Idol. But with all the horse racing upsets in the last few weeks, this is somehow fitting.
Let me start by saying, I’m really digging the commercial for Glee and the new Geico Caveman commercial. Now on to Idol, I’m not going to waste a lot of verbiage tonight but I will say it was a real interesting night. It seemed like Adam knows that he has it in the bag and he’s playing it completely safe tonight. I will partially take back what I’ve been saying all season, Adam can sing. But in the low ranges, he loses me when goes into the full on screaming/screeching mode. Each contestant does 3 songs and the script goes about as I expected, only Simon was right in his assessments, I can’t fault him tonight.
Adam opens strong with an amazing version of Mad World and knocks it out of the park. He looked fantastic, had the smoke happening and sounded great. Grade A
Adam’s next song was A Change is Going to Come, he did a great job in the low range but lost his way on the high points. Grade B-
The last song was weird, both contestants have to do the same song written by Kara DioGuardi and it was an absolute train wreck. The song is AWFUL, Adam finally left the Judges speechless and not in a good way. Simon had the gall to say HE wasn’t going to Judge Adam on the basis of that Song, but on his performance throughout the season. WTF was that? Does this mean they are officially saying Idol is fixed, that because Adam blew the song, they are going to rig the vote? They built Kara up all season as this awesome songwriter and that’s what she came up with? For Adam, The Judges and Especially Kara, an Epic F.
Tonight it all comes to an end; well, other than tomorrow night’s results show. The last Idol showdown and it’s all come down to the understated, no personality, weak voice Kris Allen, to the over the top, gay, Broadway screamer Adam Lambert. My money and everyone’s money is on Lambert moon walking all over the milk toast. But not so fast, the American public may shock us all and give it to Kris because they are tired of the Judges over pimping Adam.
Like I’ve said every week for the last 12 weeks, Adam isn’t good – he CAN’T sing! What he has is CHARISMA; he oozes it. I say give the Judges what they want I really don’t see Adam having a long-term successful pop career. Yes, he’ll be hot the first year, but I can’t imagine that screeching he does will have long-term viability outside of Broadway or Vegas. I can see him becoming really huge in those two forums but as a “Rock Star?” No way. Kris, I don’t know where he goes either or even what type of artist he would be. But despite my criticisms, I admire Kris, this is like the race between the Tortoise and the Hare. Slowly but surely Kris has quietly made it to the top 2 out of nowhere and despite all the odds. You have to admire that.
Of course I’m going to watch tonight, can’t help myself, but I don’t know if I’ll have the energy to do a Re-Cap unless something so over the top bad or good happens. I will predict that at some point tonight, Simon will tell Adam “He just won Idol with that performance,” and no matter what poor schlep Kris does, the Judges won’t’ like it. Well, they’ll try and be even handed and will rave on one Kris performance and slam the other.
Oh my god the bad singing Danny Gokey is gone from Idol. I know the judges are upset no way did they want Kris Allen to make it past the toop 6, that alone this far. He’s like the little rabit that could. So the big battle is no personality but good voice KrisAllen verses the over the top, bad voice gay guy Adam Lambert. I’m torn as to who I would want to win. I don’t like Adam because a) his singing is terrible and B) it’s who Simon and the judges have been pimping out since day one. But he oozes charisma, has that it factor and it’d just be funny to have the first open Gay, not only gay but Flamboyant Gay Idol. Then there’s Kris Allen, so boring, no personality, looks pained whenever he’s on stage and has the weakest voice of all the contestants, he’s a sad little puppy who has been kicked around for the last 10 weeks. Clearly Adam is going to win this thing, but I’m glad Gokey finally got the boot and the judges didn’t get the final they have been trying.
I can’t help myself. I wasn’t going to do an Idol Recap until Adam butchered U2s “One,” one of my favorite U2 songs. His version of One was an utter mess, it was slow, screechy, cabaret and what was with the tongue? It was AWFUL. I mean really who would actually buy this crap? Gokey was awful as always with his Terrance Trent Darby, Dance Little Sister, but I blame Paula for picking such an awful song for Gokey. I thought Kris’ version of Apologize was really good – of course the judges didn’t like it because they want Gokey and Lambert in the finals. And enough with the Mac Ads! Sheesh. I have to say Glee looks pretty awesome this is the kind of promo the producers of the Fame 2009 movie should have released.
I’ve whined and complained all season about how obviously Idol is fixed and every since the top 13 it’s been clear that the judges wanted a Adam vs. Gokey final. Now the folks at EW have a quote from Simon Cowell that proves my point, the Fix is in, there’s no point in even bothering to watch tonight. I’ve always made it clear how much I hate reality television but between crap like The Apprentice and the obvious fixing on Idol, I don’t know why people continue to support “Reality” television.
“I’d love [Adam] in the finale but really with Danny, because Kris is a nice guy, but he’s not a good enough singer to compete with Adam,” said Cowell during an interview broadcast on Fox News’ Fox & Friends morning show on Tuesday. “The only one who can compete with Adam on vocals is Danny.” Here’s the full story.
Also here are the spoilers for the Judges Picks tonight – seem like it’s going to be an awful show –
Kris Allen – Apologize, selected by Randy and Kara
Adam Lambert – U2’s “One” or Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” selected by Simon
Danny “Douchebag, No Talent” Gokey – Terence Trent D’Arby’s “Dance Little Sister”, selected by Paula
American Idol was hot tonight. This is all I’ve been asking for the last ten weeks – fun! And it took Rock night to give it to us. It started with really liked the duet with Kris Allen and Danny Gokey – for the first time Kris Allen showed a lot of personality and Danny didn’t annoy me. I was confused at first (because I wasn’t really paying attention to Idol tonight) so I when I looked up and saw the duet I was like, huh? Whaa? But it worked really well. Simon’s comment about Danny being better ticked me off – Simon just can’t help pushing Danny no matter how ridiculous he sounds.
I’m thoroughly convinced that if people didn’t actually watch Adam perform and just listen to the vocals everyone would hate him just as much as I do. I wasn’t paying attention in the beginning and thought he sucked, but then when I actually watched him it was like “Wow” he’s awesome. He did work that Zepplin song and was kicking it in the Elvis black leather. Judges ate it up with a spoon and was ready to anoint Adam right, then and there.
Ah, it’s Tuesday night and time for the train wreck known as American Idol. As I said in a previous post, I watch Idol in the hopes that there will be that one special moment that wows me. I’m not holding my breath for it, but I’m hope springs eternal. They really are desperate for mentors this season, I mean QT a few weeks ago and Jamie Foxx? Yeah I get that he’s a classically trained Julliard Musician, he’s been in three “Musicals,” and I’ll acknowledge that he is accomplished (I even saw him at the Cinerama Dome once going into the gym) but it still seems weird that he’s the one giving advice. I really miss my DVR, I’m going to have to hook up my TIVO – I did bring it with me. First up is Kris Allen whose blandness is kind of growing on me.
Does a boring ballad, I’m shocked. I know this song, but I don’t know the name – Somewhere? He’s really good, but again it’s just bland in the beginning but has a really nice big band middle. Randy and his darn “He’s in it to win it.” Randy that phrase is not going to take off, “dawg.” Kara loved it Simon thought it was good, but not as good as the other judges and thought it was a bit wet. Said it was like taking a well trained spaniel for a walk and said he didn’t think Kris could win this competition. Simon has the two that he wants in the finals and no matter what happens he’s going to try get Gokey and Lambert there. But he is right, it was a good but safe performance. My grade B
Ok, I know I keep saying I’m through with this show, but there’s nothing else on television on Tuesday nights. What am I going to do? Watch Reaper? No, no matter how much I try I can’t get into that show and the fact that it’s doomed doesn’t make me want to make an emotional investment in it. Tuesday night is pretty much me complaining about how crappy Idol is and then watching a Blu-ray movie – tonight I’m going to watch Quantum of Solace. But before I get bored by that, I need to be bored by Idol. It’s Rat Pack night tonight, lets watch these crummy Idols sap all the fun and life out of these songs. So the top 5 is Adam Lambert, Matt “Justin Timbrerlake Wannabe” Giraud, Kris Allen, Allison and Danny Gokey. Wow, what a bad line up, I think tonight should benefit Matt the most that is assuming he actually sing the songs in the Rat Pack style but he won’t, none of them will. Once again, I have to ask what is the point of these theme nights if the contestants don’t have to at least sing the song’s in the appropriate style? Of course it’s the idiot Judges fault because they are always, “you have to change it, make it your own.” Translation, turn it into some crappy, sappy, safe elevator musiq. I really hate Idol, but I can’t turn away, there I’ve said it and admitted it. I’ll say how much I hate this show for the next 3 weeks but will watch it because I’m invested in it and because there’s nothing else to watch. I don’t think I’ll do an Idol Tweet tonight, but I’ll post a recap.
