Will Ferrell’s 70’s sports comedy, Semi-Pro, hits most of the same familiar notes that Ferrell has pounded on in his previous movies. The difference here is that he has gone to the well [or the hoop] one time too often.

The Other Boleyn Girl: Period Piece Pomp & Soapy Sleaze!
While the political and historical ramifications are alluded to at end of the film, The Other Boleyn Girl is a lushly drawn period piece about two girls who are pimped out to the King of England by their father and uncle.
Want to get Inspired?
This short film is circulating the web today. While you watch it, keep this in mind – it was made by one person! Don’t know what tools the person used, but it’s pretty amazing.
Oscar Winners
After I said I wouldn’t watch it, I did tivo it and watched most of it, it cut off at 3 hours. After 80 years you’d think they figure out how to do the damn show in under 3 hrs! So I didn’t catch the last few awards. I fast forwarded over all the fluff […]
Oscars are tonight and I can’t seem to care.
The Oscars are tonight and somehow I just can’t seem to care. Last year was a really lackluster year for films as evidenced by the fact that Michael Clayton one of the most convoluted boring films that I’ve ever walked out on is nominated for best picture. Is it me or does it seem like […]
Be Kind Rewind: Michel Gondry’s Most Commercial Film!
Michel Gondry [Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind; The Science of Sleep] makes post-modern films that are usually more about subtext than what you see onscreen. While that may be true of Be Kind Rewind, there is so much on the surface that audiences won’t really need to understand the subtext to have a […]
Vantage Point: Too Many POVs Spoil The View!
Vantage Point is a pretty cool idea: meld the multiple point-of-views of Akira Kurosawa’s Rashomon onto a modern thriller. The basic idea is that the President of the United States is assassinated and we get the act from several different points of view – each adding a little more to our knowledge of the […]
Charlie Bartlett: Would You Like to Talk About It?
The trailer for Charlie Bartlett revolves, mostly, around the application of prescription to elicit humor. If the film had been solely about that, it would likely have been just as entertaining, but it would have been a one-trick pony. Fortunately, it is both smarter and wiser than that.
Leonardo does Akira!
Anime classic "Akira" is getting the live-action treatment courtesy of Leonardo DiCaprio and Warner Bros. Ruairi Robinson has been hired to direct what would ideally be a two-part epic. Gary Whitta is writing the adaptation. "Akira" originated in 1988 as a manga and then as an animated film. The story was set in a neon-lit […]
Definitely, Maybe? Definitely!
Definitely, Maybe is a smart, witty, genuinely funny romantic comedy with intelligent plotting, real conversations and not one, but two happy endings – though not necessarily the kind of happy endings that you find in the usual Hollywood romcom.
Jumper: Read the Book!
Doug Liman’s Jumper is an adaptation of a far superior novel by Steven Gould. It is a total travesty in terms of story and character – and will probably do well with the ADD crowd. Pity.
