The Crossroads of Love ch.6

Chapter Six/ Lies lies lies yeah…….

Sarah and Ryan decided to go eat Italian food since that was Sarah’s favorite. They were already on their dessert which was Tiramisu ( Italian Coffee cake ) and ofcourse a yummy Cappuccino. Ryan had begun telling Sarah his boring tales of his adventures in college where he studied Business Law.

“And there we were half naked and blind folded on top of the Empire State building and we had no idea where our fraternity brother’s had left us! But I knew we were in trouble when I felt that cold draft on my body!”

Sarah could only smile and take small sips of her Cappuccino wishing she was somewhere else.

‘Is this what life with Ryan will be like forever? Stories of the only days that he had the nerve to be different and crazy?’

“So finally when we couldn’t handle the freezing weather one of us took off the blind fold only to see a hand full of security guards rushing to kick us off! My parents had to go bail me out! Man my father didn’t speak to me until the next Christmas vacation!”

Sarah did a fake laugh and continued eating her Tiramisu.

“Ha ha ha well Ryan you and your buddies sure sound like you were a bunch of crazy guys back then huh? So do you still see your old college friends?”

Ryan smiled widely,”Yeah oh yeah we still have our annual renunion with all our Brother’s, it’s tradition. You know they are all successful lawyers, doctors, and business men like me. They are always having these fund raisers and get togethers if you wanna go with me. I, I haven’t asked you cause well I know my friends and they would have probably assumed you were my girlfriend and embarrass me in some way.”

Sarah smiled and swallowed hard knowing where he was headed with this conversation. Sarah knew Ryan very well by now that they had been friends for two years now. But lately they had gotten closer.

“So what do you say Sarah? Do you want to?”

“Want to what? Ryan?”

“Do you want to be my official girlfriend and well ofcourse go with me to these affairs? He he he as my girlfriend?”

Sarah blinked her eyes trying to act normal. She took one more sip of her coffee. “Look Ryan, You know very well that you are one of my closest friend. My bestfriend for these past two years but, I don’t feel the same way that you do for me. I mean I think you are great and I, I …”

Ryan grabbed Sarah’s hand and smiled a small smile to her,”Sarah I know that you don’t love me and I don’t expect you to, yet but atleast give us a chance. Give me a chance Sarah. Let me prove my love to you. Maybe I can make you love me.”

Sarah knew deep in her heart that she would never love Ryan the way he would like but she also knew that time passed and she always somehow drove men away from her all because of her one dark obsession. Jareth.

“Look Ryan please give me some time to think about this ok. I, I need time.”

They finished dinner and Sarah decided she wanted to go home and not go anywhere else. Ryan tried to kiss her goodbye on her lips but Sarah quickly moved her face to place her cheek instead. “Good night Ryan, I’ll call you when I make my decision.”

“Ok my sweet Sarah, sleep well. I shall wait for your call anxiously.” he said trying to act charming holding her hand and bowing down to her like a true classical gentleman.

Sarah knew that he was but she also knew that she needed more than just comfort. Or did she? She did not know now but soon she would be made to believe so.

Jareth threw the crystal as he saw what was going on with Sarah and Ryan raging in jealousy he couldn’t help but became angry and frustrated more than he was already.

Then to make matters worse Gertrude popped in right in time. “So Jareth my dear, it seems that your damsel in distress is no longer waiting for her knight in shining armor is she. Maybe she has decided reality is better than fantasy. After all this Ryan guy really does seem to become her doesn’t he, Jareth?”

Jareth stared at her with a daggered look wanting to cover his ears and not hear this,”And what do you know of Sarah’s life you Wench or do you spy on her?”

“Do I spy on her as well you mean, why yes, I have always been curious about this little heathen who has stolen my husband’s heart. One can never know too much of their enemy.” She smiles as she walks around fingering every bit of furniture in the room that passed her way.

“Well why does this news even shock me? You obviously are not the fae woman I thought you were Gertrude. Your newly confessed secrets should not shock me.” Jareth decided to stay calm and not make a big deal about what she had just told him. As long as she had not done anything so far to harm Sarah that’s all that mattered.

Gertrude smiled knowing she had touched a nerve but knew deep within her that she had to do something to make Sarah forget Jareth and move on with her life so that she finally go on living her life with Jareth. And ofcourse the baby she would later have to provide for theirs.

Jareth left the room and walked to his Library wanting to avoid a fight with his now pregnant wife.

Sarah was looking at her reflection sitting at her vanity lost in thought. When she hears a soft voice call her name out.

“Sarah, Sarah. I need your help.”

Sarah stood up turning back to see who was talking to her.

“Sarah, Sarah. I need your help.”

Sarah called out scared and alarmed,”Who, who is there?”

Then out of the dark corner appeared a light. It was Gertrude dressed in a silver dress that fell to her feet. Her hair flew in the air with it’s silver streak reflecting every ounce of light in the room. Her face covered in silver and gold glitter, lips shimmering in gold.

Sarah was in awe to see such a beautiful faerie appear before her. She admired the pointy ears sticking out of her long flowy hair. Her thin frail body and pointy nose. She looked like she had stepped out of a fairy tale. She was beautiful.

“Who , who are you?”

Gertrude came walking towards Sarah with the saddest face Sarah had ever seen.”Sarah I came to speak with you. I need your help.”

Sarah was shocked the faerie knew her name. She did not know what to do. “You need MY help. But what can I do to help you?”

Gertrude knew she had to act the part in order to touch the depths of Sarah’s soul. She had to fool Sarah. ” Sarah you may not know this but you have been an obstacle to my happiness these past years.”

Sarah fell seated to her bed not knowing what to make of such news. “ME but how?”

“See Sarah, someone has decieved you. See I am Jareth’s wife.”

Tears came to Sarah’s eyes as she raised her hand to her now wide open mouth. “Jareth’s wife? But I didn’t know he was married. He, he never told me.”

“Well isn’t it obvious Sarah. He didn’t want you to know. We got married after you beat him at his own game. He married me by contract but soon after that I realized that I loved him. I love him Sarah yet he does not love me. You have been the obstacle to my happiness all my married years. He has not forgotten you.”

Sarah could not beleive the news. She knew that Jareth loved her but she did not know because of that love he was not true to his wife. She did not want to be one to break up a marriage.

“Sarah, I , I am pregnant. I am expecting Jareth’s child and I need him to be with me. Do you understand? I don’t want anything to break up our home or marriage.”

Sarah nodded her head in understanding. She knew all to well the pain of a break up. She did not want Jareth’s child to be in such a predicament. “But what can I do to help Gertrude? I have done nothing to make Jareth love me. I have tried to forget him but..”

Gertrude in her best acting skills began to cry. “Please Sarah I beg you. I don’t want Jareth to leave me or my baby! Please Sarah I need your help. I beg you from one woman to another heed my pain.”

Sarah could not stand to see she caused someone so much pain. Crying now herself she replied,”But , but what can I do?”

“Show him Sarah, show him that you can move on without him. Marry Ryan, then I guarantee you that Jareth will forget you. His hopes would all disappear and he would know that he has lost you forever. But ONLY if you marry Sarah. Only then will he be all mine.”

Sarah cried shaking her head in disbelief while Gertrude threw herself to Sarah’s feet grabbing Sarah’s hand. “Please Sarah, you don’t want my baby to grow up without Jareth do you?”

Sarah nodded no she knew all too well the pain of a parent leaving. “No I wouldn’t want that.”

“Then you need to marry Ryan Sarah. Marry him and have children of your own. Go on with your life and if Jareth ever approaches you again. Make sure he goes away knowing that you don’t love him. Do you promise me that?”

Sarah felt so bad inside, her heart breaking to hear such news and such a request. She knew she could not live with herself if she broke up a family. She would NOT be the cause of such a disgrace. With pain in her heart and soul she nodded yes.

Gertrude stood up wiping the tears off her face knowing she had accomplished her deed. “Oh thank you Sarah. Thank you, I thank you and my baby does too.” She said as she touched her womb.

“You shall never regret this Sarah!” Gertrude said as she disappeared leaving a trace of silver and gold glitter.

Sarah fell to the floor weeping and sobbing for her life had just became a whirlwind of sorrows.
