TELEVISION: American Idol Recap (04.21.10)

The Top 7 are about to become the Top 6, but not before 2 hours of “Idol Gives Back.”  This is the night that celebs ask you to dig deep and help out the various charities that American Idol supports in our country and across the globe.  Ryan Seacrest is hosting the show in Hollywood and Queen Latifah is hosting from the Pasadena Civic Center.  It’s gonna be a star packed night with Mary J. Blige, Carrie Underwood, The Black Eyed Peas, Sir Elton John and many, many more.  Oh yeah, last night’s mentor, Alicia Keys, is performing too.  So, on with the show…

Of course, we have a group performance.  PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE get rid of this number next year.  The IDOLS sing something about keeping the dream alive.  I really wasn’t paying attention because I was writing the paragraph above.

There will be tons of reports tonight from our country and others, but I won’t be detailing them.  However, you can check out IDOL’s website on Fox if you want to learn more about these programs and how to give.  Since this is a singing competition, I will be commenting on all of the music performances, so bring them on.

The Black Eyed Peas have to be one of the worst sounding live groups ever.  The only one who can sing is Fergie when she actually sings and not raps.  They are singing “Rock Your Body” and it’s so synthesized.  Fergie also sounds like she is screaming.  Definitely not a superstar performance.  I think I would have preferred the group performance again.

After a heart breaking story on Malaria in Africa, we finally get to some results…and comedian George Lopez will be delivering the bad news…although he’s very funny doing it.  Instead of eliminating a contestant though, he decides to judge the judges.  George tells Randy to concentrate and form his own thoughts.  He says people at the dog pound don’t say dog as much as he does.  He adds, “But you’re the only black dude on the show, so you are safe.”  He then turns to Kara and says she takes credit for writing every song on the show and that he wall papered his bedroom with the “nudie picture in the magazine.”  He adds, “Karla, you are safe.”  Yes, he called her Karla.  He turns to Ellen.  His bit with Ellen isn’t really that funny… he says she never dances on IDOL, but on her own show she dances for a car jingle.  Whatever.  Now on to Simon.  George says, “Every night you say, ‘that was rubbish.  Ryan, stop touchin me.'”  George tells him to mix it up and every now and then to wear a large t-shirt because “people at home can tell how cold it is in the studio.”  He goes on to say, “I have always wanted to ask…saline or silicone?”  And everyone roars.  He says America has voted and Simon has to go back to England, but since there is a volcano and people can’t fly, Simon gets to stay.  Apparently no one told Lopez that the airports opened last night.

After the Ford music video, 43 minutes in, we get to elminations.  Ugh!

Crystal and Casey are asked to go to center stage.  One is in the bottom three, the other is not.  Ryan drags it out and then reveals it’s Casey.  DUH!!!

Aaron and Lee are called to center stage.  Same routine.  Lee is safe and Aaron moves to the bottom three.  Again, duh!!!

We go back to Pasadena where Queen Latifah introduces Jeff Beck and Joss Stone who sings, “I Put A Spell On You.”  How the heck is that inspirational???  Queen Latifah does a better version of the song.  I love Joss Stone, but I don’t like her on this.  The song feels like it is going on for days.

After a sad story with Morgan Freeman and Randy Jackson, Alicia Keys comes out to sing “Unthinkable” and “Empire State of Mind.”  Now this is how you sing.  Take note, Fergie.  Keys has amazing vocal ability and she uses almost no backing.  It’s just her vocally!!!  Awesomeness.

The whole Russell Brand/Jonah Hill bit totally tanked…both times.  This show is horrible tonight.  Finally something good…Carrie Underwood.

She is singing “Change.”  I don’t like Country music, but I love me some Carrie Underwood.  She has become such a stellar performer since her days on IDOL.  She sounds amazing, as always.  Another woman with a flawless voice.

After Ellen takes us to a food pantry, Ryan tells us the show is running long.  Why can’t these people time out a show??  Cut the Russell Brand/Jonah Hill B.S.  ugh!

Ryan then interviews Bill and Melinda Gates who talk about their foundation.  Then Wanda Sykes treats us to a very funny bit asking why IDOL let’s the loser sing when they get voted off.  It’s true!  That and how they crush their dreams with a beautiful taped piece.  LOL

More eliminations… Mike, Tim and Siobhan are called center stage.  Two are safe.  Ryan reveals that Siobhan is one of them.  It’s down to Mike and Tim.  Ryan reveals that Mike too is safe and Tim Urban goes to the bottom three.

In the bottom three we have Casey, Aaron and Tim.  I think it’s Aaron.

Annie Lennox introduces us to a very sick little girl in Africa who has pnumonia and AIDS.  It’s so depressing.  Annie checks back in with her a few months later and she looks amazing b/c she got the drugs she needed.  Sad.  Annie then performs from London, I assume.  She couldn’t get to LA b/c of the Volcano.  As always, her voice is amazing.

This show is running way late.  It’s 9:50 and Elton John and Mary J. Blige must still perform and we have to eliminate someone.

Mary J. Blige performs “Stairway To Heaven.”  Her rendition rocks.  She is backed by Orianthi and Randy Jackson.  She sounds phenominal.  Love MJB.

It’s 10:01 and we are just getting to Simon’s report.  We still have Elton John and the elimination to get too.

10:09 and we are just getting to Sir Elton John.  At 10:11, he sings “Your Song.”  Elton may be old as dirt and have a nasty reputation, but he still has a voice.  Love hearing him sing this classic.

Finally, at 10:20, the final results… 20 minutes over!  Unreal!!!    One of the three, Casey, Aaron or Tim is safe…  it’s Aaron!!!  I’m wrong again!   So going home tonight is…TIM URBAN!!!

So long, Tim!  And speaking of long, man, was this show long!!!!  Ugh… until next week!!!
