PIRATES

While Eclipsemagazine still has plenty more goodies to share with readers from our adventures at the 2010 San Diego Comic Con, I think it’s only fitting that we take a nostalgic look back at all the wonders the 4 day event had to share with us while we were there.

The San Diego Comic Con has a multitude of things to offer that cater to many different interests, be it comic books which were the original focus of the event when it first began, to action/adventure/Scifi movies, TV shows, collectibles, gaming, costuming or just getting to meet a favorite actor/writer/producer/artist.

“I got my picture taken with Bruce Greenwood!!!!!”

Oh sorry, I digressed  there for a moment. Now that I’m back on track again, let’s take a look at some of the things that Comic Con had to offer a roving reporter wandering down the hallways and through the exhibit hall.

Much to the relief of anxious fans who have been waiting nervously to hear the fate of their beloved shows, The CW has spared them a few extra gray hairs in the coming months by announcing early pickups for five of their series.  Returning to the schedule for the Fall 2010 season are four dramas: The Vampire Diaries, Supernatural, Gossip Girl, and 90210, along with the long-running hit reality series America’s Next Top Model.

The renewals are not entirely a surprise, as industry experts have correctly predicted these outcomes for a while now based on series performance and actors’ contracts.  The CW has also gained extra brownie points and cemented viewer loyalty even further by being generous in their early announcements and sparing their viewers the agony of having to wait until the “May upfronts” where such announcements are usually made by all networks, in addition to revealing the new shows to debut in their Fall line-ups.   As our previous post stated, curiously missing from the renewal list at this time is Smallville.

The-Vampire-Diaries

The CW [We’re number five, we have to try way harder!] has announced its first renewals for next season: breakout cult hit The Vampire Diaries, Josh Schwartz’s Gossip Girl, the soapy soap 90210, horror drama "Supernatural" and the network’s top reality show "America’s Next Top Model."

It remains to be seen if the network will extend the same good fortune to the lame soap Melrose Place, the over-the-hill One Tree Hill, the net’s best new series Life Unexpected or the reliable comics-based Smallville – though I wouldn’t bet against Smallville getting a tenth season.

The people have spoken!  And among the winners announced during the January 6 telecast of the People’s Choice Awards, were The CW’s Thursday night power team.  Freshman series The Vampire Diaries was awarded ‘Favorite New Drama’ beating out its competition Flash Forward, V, The Good Wife, and NCIS: Los Angeles.  And The CW’s excellent and critically-praised veteran series Supernatural was awarded ‘Favorite SciFi/Fantasy Show’ beating out its competition Heroes, Lost, Vampire Diaries, and True Blood.

Both shows, well-written and featuring terrific casts, return Thursday, January 21 with new episodes following the long winter hiatus. For great drama, make the People’s Choice YOUR choice Thursday night starting at 8:00 pm on The CW.
