DVD Review: Kubo and the Two Strings – Still Brilliant!

Kubo and the Two Strings is a genuinely amazing film. It’s a story of family on both an intimate and mythic level. It’s also absolutely gorgeous to look at.

If not for the Pixar release Zootopia, it would be almost certainly a lock for this year’s best animated film Oscar®. The DVD is now available and it’s a must for any collector of great animation.

Florence Foster Jenkins is a film that is based on the last few months of the title character’s life. Jenkins was a fierce music lover – she supported the music scene in New York and eventually decided that she had to sing.

It was not the smartest move she could have made – she is considered to be one of the all-time worst singers.

Eye in the Sky is an intense war film that examines the price of war. It suggests that the cost of war is too high – whether you’re in an actual on the ground conflict, or not.

This is Alan Rickman’s last film and it’s one that does his talent – and that of everyone involved – proud.

From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series: Season Two – Screwed On Tight!

From Dusk S2 DVD

Season one of From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series essentially told a slightly different version of the story from the movie – in which nearly everyone died – in order to keep Seth and Richie Gekko alive. Along the way, it just happened to be great fun.

The Choice is better than I was expecting – which is to say it was a notch above mediocre. It follows the standard Nicholas Sparks formula – a couple meets cute, bickers ‘til they don’t, fall in love, obstacles (sometimes tragic) ensue, and love conquers all.

What is unexpected is the genuine chemistry between the leads – Benjamin Walker and Teresa Palmer – and some lovely supporting performances (including a couple by some very talented dogs).

Teen Lust

Teen Lust’s main character is a mostly virtuous young person who goes to church, gets good grades, generally makes the right choices and is also a virgin – which is bad if the church the family belongs to is the Church of Satan and the young person is about to turn eighteen and become a blood sacrifice to unleash Hell on Earth.
