It’s tough to do just a DVD review anymore since many movies, especially those being released by Warner Home Video, are being packaged as combos that include DVD, Blu-Ray and Digital Download. So this is really a review of both the DVD and the Blu-Ray discs since both are included in the packaging.

It seems like only yesterday, but it was actually back in late April that I was sitting down in the theater to see an advanced screening of a movie called The Losers. The Losers, which is based on a graphic novel of the same name, was an all out action movie about a special-forces unit consisting of Clay (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), Jensen (Chris Evans), Roque (Idris Elba), Pooch (Columbus Short), and Cougar (Oscar Jaenada) who reluctantly join forces with a mysterious woman named Aisha (Zoe Saldana) to stop a rogue CIA agent named Max (Jason Patric)  who burned Clay’s team during a covert military operation in Bolivia.  Under the direction Sylvain White and the outstanding casting of the actors in the their various roles, The Losers was a non-stop thrill ride that I really thought would be a bigger box office draw than it ended up as. But then my inner child is a 12 year old boy, or so I have been told by my friends, so I might be a little biased when it comes to action movies with lots of explosions and wild chase scenes. I mean right after seeing The Losers for the first time, I wanted to go back and see it again I liked it so much.

To me the movie was a nice balance of action and character drama. Clay’s team of ‘Losers’ as he called them were a good mix of macho, funny and heroic. Aisha wasn’t some stereotypical ‘ model pretty, kick ass chick’. She had mystery and inner strength as well as outer beauty and combat skills.

So here we are, three months later, writing a review of the movie’s release by Warner Brothers Home Video onto a combo pack for home viewing entertainment.

Thanks to the high quality of the disc release, The Losers is just as much fun on the small screen at home as it was on the huge screen at the Theater.  It has been my experience that quite a few larger than life action movies, lose some of their power when they are translated to the home TV screen, even on a ‘big screen TV’. The Losers doesn’t have that problem. The bangs are every bit as impressive for the buck as they were in the theater as are the extensive fight scenes and all out thrill ride chase scenes. Oh and from a strictly feminine point of view, Clay (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) is still a sight to behold. But I digress.

Back to the review of the release of The Losers for home viewing. While I can continue to wax poetic about The Losers as  a fun action movie and a great way to spend a Saturday night at home in front of the TV with your buddies, I have to say I was extremely disappointed that the special features are only limited to the Blu-Ray Disc.

If you don’t have a Blu-Ray player at home then you really are missing out on some otherwise very cool special features like:

– Band of Buddies: Ops Training
– Close up Look at the Action Sequences
– Transforming Puerto Rico as a Stand-in for Several Global Locations
– The Losers: Action-style Storytelling
– Deleted Scene
– Zoe and The Losers

So with that disappointment in mind I would have to give the following grades to the Combo Pack Release of The Losers:

Disc quality and movie clarity and variety of viewing options: A

Special Features B

Special Features only being available on the Blu-Ray Disc F

Overall Grade for The Warner Brothers Home Video release of The Losers – B
