Chapter 27

“Hello Nicole, the voice said, stepping closer toward her. “It is so good to see you again.

Nicole smiled. “Auguste? she asked, a little stunned. “Auguste de Barbarac, is that you? I have been looking for you all morning.

Auguste stared at her. He thought she might be angry. He thought he would have more persuading. She was more stubborn and independent than any woman he had ever known.

And he loved her because of it.

“Who is this man I was talking to earlier? she gestured toward the man standing next to him.

“I am Edmond, milady, he said, bowing low, “I am Auguste’s uncle, brother to his late father, Georges de Barbarac. He stood. “I am executor of the Manor de Barbarac, which surprisingly, isn’t all that far from the castle.

“Well, Nicole looked at him. “Our manor isn’t far from the castle either. But it is on the other end of the castle.

Edmond smiled. “Your father is Baron Jacques de Lancret, is it not?

Nicole nodded. “Yes it is.

Edmond smiled and nodded his head. “Well then, this is all excellent news. Come then, we have an appointment with the King in a few….

Nicole stopped them and shook her head. “No. All appointments have been cancelled. The King has had a stroke and is recovering under strict orders from the court physician which we await any minute.

“Yes I know, Auguste said, “we were sent out her for a short time and await instructions to return. In the meantime, we were told that you were somewhere in the castle. When we pressed for an answer, I was told right away. That’s when we came out to look for you.

“Well, you have found me. Now explain why your uncle made this journey with you.
