TELEVISION RECAP – Gossip Girl, Reversals of Fortune – Season 3, Episode 1

Gossip Girl

Summer is coming to a close Blair  (Leighton Meester) and Chuck (Ed Westwick) spent their summer being a couple.  Chuck is in a coffee shop where a blond picks him up; Blair comes in and tells the woman Chuck is taken and stay away from her man.  Turns spice up their relationship by playing games where Blair can play the role of the scorned woman.  Serena (Blake Lively) spent the summer in Europe being a tabloid sensation, while the Humphries summered in the Hamptons and are enjoying being part of the lifestyles of the rich and famous, Lilly (Kelly Rutherford) is away caring for her sick mother, leaving Rufus (Matthew Settle) to take care of the family.  Jenny (Taylor Momsen) and Eric (Connor Paolo) spent the summer hiding all the magazine articles about Serena from Rufus and Dan (Penn Badgley).

Serena tells Blair that she better be careful playing these games that there’s a fine line between having fun playing the Scorned woman and really becoming the scorned. Nate (Chace Crawford) and Vanessa’s (Jessica Szohr) European trip ended with nothing really being mentioned about what happened. Other than Nate and Vanessa hooking up once with Vanessa saying it was no big deal. Nate met a new woman, Bree (played by former Privileged star Joanna Garcia) on the return flight, turns out the mystery woman is a Buckley: the Archibald’s bitter enemies.  Vanessa has been hanging out with her new friend Scott who is obviously using her to get close to the Humphreys’. Nate tries to prove to his family that he’s his own man by bringing Bree to a family event.  Bree is not happy because she says she did the same thing that Nathan is doing now and her family won’t speak to her. She’s doing everything she can to get them back so any relationship they might have would have to be kept on the DL.

Vanessa is upset that Dan is turning into a rich snob. Scott convinces Vanessa to crash the Humphrey family outing at some Charity Polo Event, turns out Scott is the secret love child of Lilly and Rufus.  He uses the opportunity to meet Rufus. After her fight with Dan, Vanessa put the moves on Scott.  Blair and Dan confront Carter (Sebastian Stan) over his stalking and harassment of Serena. Serena makes a scene and spectacle of herself by stealing a horse and running away. Carter chases after her. Turns out they have a thing going on and the big reveal at the end of the episode is that Serena spent her summer trying to get her long lost father to recognize her: she’s been working with a paparazzi to plant as many photos of her in Tabloids so her dad can’t “escape” her. Yeah, that’s a great plan.

Comments

This episode was a struggle to get through it was boring and uneventful. Everyone is still acting as though they are still in high-school, doing the same thing over and over. Joanna seemed so uncomfortable and out of place it was kind of painful to watch her scenes with Nate. It’ll be interesting to see what happens when they finally get to college next week, although I’m not holding out much hope for improvement because Georgina is back in Episode 2 and I strongly dislike Michelle Trachtenberg.  I’m also getting a bit tired of seeing Blair be so out of character and needy around Chuck. I’d like to see her “woman” up and demand more from him. At times she comes across as a stalker or some lovesick 12 year old. You got your man, now act like it.
