IFC’S Sherman’s Showcase one-hour “Black History Month Spectacular,” premieres Juneteeth – Friday, June 19 at 10PM ET/PT on AMC and 11PM ET/PT on IFC. The witty, irreverent and wholly original Sherman’s Showcase “Black History Month Spectacular” honors historic African-American icons both past and present, alongside superheroes, period dramas, vampires, and a very special re-imagining of the cult film The Last Dragon.

Executive producer John Legend participated in a panel at ATX Television Festival this past Saturday alongside creators, stars and executive producers Diallo Riddle and Bashir Salahuddin, and executive producer Mike Jackson. On the importance of the Spectacular and celebrating black culture during the current climate John shared, “There’s a lot of joy that we can share with other people. And I think it’s important for us to continue to share that joy, that laughter, with intelligence and with an eye to what’s going on in the world. But people still need to laugh and enjoy themselves. I think it’s important that we show the fullness of what it is to be Black and human. Through our art, we’re able to do that.”

Co-creator, star and executive producer Diallo Riddle continued, saying, “I think that it’s a really weird place right now, where you do wonder, ‘Is it okay to be silly? Is it okay to laugh?’ I think people need those moments of levity. Those moments to laugh, to dance, to do the things that we love so that you can actually recharge that battery. You do have to be sensitive to that. But then again, I just always come back to the fact that what has gotten our people through the past and the present has always been our culture. That’s the music, that’s the comedy, and the black boy joy, to use the nomenclature of the current day. We have to keep that going.”

Special guest stars in the spectacular include (in alphabetical order) rapper Phonte Coleman, Michael Ealy, journalist Jemele Hill, Lil Rel Howery,  actor and TV host Terrence J, series executive producer and Emmy®-, GRAMMY®-, Oscar®- and Tony®-winner John Legend, rapper and activist Vic Mensa, GRAMMY® winner Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, Bresha Webb, Vanderpump Rules’ Tom Sandoval and Tom Schwartz, GRAMMY® winner Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter, Tyrin Turner, Mario Van Peebles and more.

Creators and stars Diallo Riddle and Bashir Salahuddin serve as executive producers on the series, along with John Legend, Mike Jackson and Ty Stiklorious through their Get Lifted Film Co. (La La Land, Underground, Jesus Christ Superstar). Pete Aronson serves as executive producer, and Frank Scherma and Jim Bouvet of RadicalMedia (Stan Against Evil, Conversations With a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes) also executive produce.
