Schmultz Fest

Sorry I didn’t know there was a previous forum on Digital v. Celluloid. Let’s try again. It seems to me like there has been a higher rate of schmultz films in the last few years. Some examples are The Majestic, I am Sam, Pearl Harbor, Elling (the Norwegian film nominated for a forign film oscar last year), The Shipping News, Chocolate, etc. I could keep going and going to beat the energizer bunny. These films, in my opinion, exist only to ellicit the following comment from the audience: “That was nice.” I’m not saying that every movie has to challange you, or be cutting edge, but why are we seeing a higher concentration of heartstringers? This trend started a couple of years ago so you can’t use 9/11 as a reason. Are we becoming victims of marketing research or is this what most of America really wants? Let me know what you think.
