Does Anyone Really Care About The Oscars?

Does anyone care about this weekend’s Oscars? I always avoid covering award shows on this site because EVERYONE else covers them, and frankly I don’t think most people care about the awards as much as the hype suggests. Or am I wrong?

Let me give you all my Predictions so I’ll seem like I’m some sort of sage –ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLEJohnny Depp – PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARLBen Kingsley – HOUSE OF SAND AND FOGJude Law – COLD MOUNTAINBill Murray – LOST IN TRANSLATIONSean Penn – MYSTIC RIVERMY PICKSEAN PENNWhile I would love to see Bill Murray win this thing, I don’t think the Academy will reward him this year because his body of work doesn’t yet warrant an award – especially since his roles are primarily comedy, and the Oscar voters don’t appreciate the art of comedy. Sean Penn will get this because he gave two strong performances in a single year, and has been doing so for awhile now. So it’s his time for it. ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLEAlec Baldwin – THE COOLERBenicio Del Toro – 21 GRAMSDjimon Hounsou – IN AMERICATim Robbins – MYSTIC RIVERKen Watanabe – THE LAST SAMURAIMY PICKTim RobbinsWhile I didn’t like “”Mystic River,”” well that’s a strong statement, I absolutely adored the first half of MR and even teared up, the film completely falls apart in the 3rd act. Robbins’ performance sort of irritated me in this, but I think he’ll get the award for his body of work, and not necessarily for this film.ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLEKeisha Castle-Hughes – WHALE RIDERDiane Keaton – SOMETHING’S GOTTA GIVESamantha Morton – IN AMERICACharlize Theron – MONSTERNaomi Watts – 21 GRAMSMY PICKI think Diane Keaton will get it for her body of work, although I think Charlize Theron DESERVES it.ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLEShohreh Aghdashloo – HOUSE OF SAND AND FOGPatricia Clarkson – PIECES OF APRILMarcia Gay Harden – MYSTIC RIVERHolly Hunter – THIRTEENRen
