Dateline Interactive Special on NBC

I was watching Dateline with Stone Phillips (had to throw that in) Satuarday night and the whole thing was about this man holding hostages in a hotel room in a town named Reston. I didn’t get the State, I was channel surfing at the time.
Anyway, Stone kept breaking off the story to show a survey poll that people could go online to vote. The poll questions were about what the police might do in certain situations and how many hostages that the man had, etc.
For example: The man claimed that he had 5 hostages in the room. The poll question asked how many hostages do you think this crazed man had. The choses were 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5.
Another example: The man wanted to marry one of the hostages. The poll question asked should the police allow the crazed man to marry on the hostages.
They go to a break and then come back on with a percentage of votes to each poll questions.
Now, I want to know, who are participating in these interactive surveys?!! 😕
Has anyone seen this?! Do a lot of people watch tv shows on their computers with the internet running in the background?! Are they running back and forth from their TV sets to their computers to put their votes in? Are they using the internet on their laptops while watching a TV set? Do these people have that WEBtv thing? How many people have that? The WEBtv thingy?
Someone please enlighted me?!! I don’t know anyone who would answer these polls. I was more interested in the story. Like how the police was going to get this man.
