The winners of the 71st Annual Peabody Awards – possibly the most prestigious awards for television, radio and online programming – have been announced and it should probably come as no surprise that HBO’s Game of Thrones and Treme, PBS’ Austin City Limits, Showtime’s Homeland and syndicated game show Jeopardy were among them.

Awake [NBC, Thursdays, 10/9C] is one of the best of the season’s new programs, but you’d never know it from the ratings. At least when the show’s cast and creator promised a penguin, they came through with a penguin. Maybe that will help the ratings; maybe not. Still, it looks like a thoroughly entertaining hour of television.

When Bones [Fox, Mondays, 8/7C] returns on April 2, FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth and forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance Brennan will welcome their first child [a girl] into the world and onto the series – but that’s not the only big news for the show, which has been picked up for an eighth season. Fox made the announcement this morning.
The BBC’s first trailer for the seventh season of the rebooted Doctor Who is now available for your enjoyment. There’s a pat on the back and a cheery ‘well done’ if you can spot two appearances that harken back to the very first season of the original series back in 19 and 64.

It may not be burning up the ratings race, but NBC is showing a little faith in its critically acclaimed freshman series Smash. The network today announced that smash will be back for a second second season. The series is about the making of a Broadway musical about Marilyn Monroe – and the lives of the people involved in the production.
When Karen Gillan [Amy Pond] and Arthur Darvill [Rory Williams] leave the TARDIS for the last time, Doctor Who’s Timelord will be joined by Jenna-Louise Coleman, a twenty-five year old from Blackpool who will, according to showrunner, Steven Moffat, ‘can talk even faster than he does.’
Coleman’s first appearance will be in the 2012 Doctor Who Christmas Special – and she joins the show during a dramatic turn of events. The change in companions in just one in a series of events as the show builds to its 50th anniversary year.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard is going where no starship captain has gone before. Sir Patrick Stewart has been officially announced as the host of the 71st Annual George Foster Peabody Awards ceremony on Monday, May 21, at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City. Stewart, who has been involved in two Peabody Award-winning productions, is the first actor to be named as host of the prestigious awards than honor the best in electronic media.
Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic swashbuckler, Treasure Island, comes to Syfy on May 5th as a one night, four-hour special event. The RHI Entertainment production stars Eddie Izzard as Long John Silver, Elijah Wood as Ben Gunn and Donald Sutherland as Flint. Tony Regbo [the Harry Potter films] is young Jim Hawkins.
It hasn’t even premiered yet, but Starz has given Magic City a second season.
The series, which revolves around the most luxurious hotel/casino in Miami as the fifties ended, stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Ike Morgan, [Supernatural, Grey’s Anatomy, Watchmen] the hotel’s owner; Olga Kurylenko [Hitman, Quantum of Solace] as Ike’s wife, Vera, and Danny Huston [The Kingdom, Children of Men] as Ben Diamond, the crime boss who holds the mortgage on Ike’s soul – and the hotel.
