Set in Somerset, England of 1888, The Living and the Dead takes place on the cusp of changing attitudes and knowledge about how the world works. The good folk of Somerset are stuck between superstition and science – a land of ghosts and poltergeists facing an industrial, science-based future.

Alf Nelson is a complex man – a gentleman farmer seeking proof of the afterlife and investigating the supernatural for the Society for Psychic Research. As his investigations deepen, he encounters things that beggar the imagination – and, quite possibly, threaten his family, his livelihood and his sanity.

The Living and the Dead if from Life Mars (Original Recipe) creators Ashley Pharoah and Matthew Graham (the aforementioned Life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes, Eternal Law) are writing the series for BBC America and BBC One.
