WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) – A $960,000 exhibition based on “The Lord of the Rings” film trilogy will open at the Museum of New Zealand in December, and then tour to museums in London, Boston, Singapore and Sydney.

“The Lord of the Rings Motion Picture Trilogy â€â€? The Exhibition” will feature original costumes, film footage, props and special effects from the three films based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s books, Paul Brewer, spokesman for the Museum of New Zealand, said Thursday.

Developed with New Line Cinema, the exhibition will open after the second movie in the trilogy, “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers,” premieres in Wellington on Dec. 18.

Visitors will be met by the main characters and other creatures from New Zealand writer-director Peter Jackson’s adaptation of Tolkien’s books.

They also will experience some of the film’s special effects, Brewer said.

The three movies, shot together in New Zealand over an 18-month period, are being released over three years. The first, “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring,” came out last December.
