47 Ronin Blu-ray Review

47-ronin-blu-ray

It’s Keanu Reeves as a fallen Japanese Samurai fighting magic and dragons, what could possibly go wrong? 47 Ronin is now available on Blu-ray, DVD and other home video options.

Movie

Ok, this has to be one of the weirdest films that i’ve seen in awhile. Keanu Reeves is Kai a fallen Samurai fighter who is forced to become a Ronin after he fails his master. In a land of witches, demons and magic, it is up to 47 fallen Samurai to save their country when the evil Lord Kira (Tadanobu Asano) seeks to become ruler of Japan using a witch to help him take territory. In the process he kills Kai’s former master and kidnaps his daughter, who just happens to be Kai’s soul mate.

Keanu-47-Ronin

Written and Directed by Carl Rinsch the plot is so convoluted that I had a really hard time keeping up with it and the set decorations was fairly drab and the great picture and audio qualify of the Blu-ray transfer doesn’t help nor hurt.

Extras

What is going on with Blu-rays lately, most of the big releases this year have been fairly featureless and the trend continues here. All we get are a couple of lame short featurettes that don’t provide much information on the production of the film. The highlights, such as they are include 4 shorts that discusses the Story, Keanu’s training, the Fights and one that provides a bit more color on the Myths and Monsters used in the film. There’s a digital copy for both iTunes and Ultraviolet (I always love it when the digital version works on both services.)

Conclusion

47 Ronin is better than the logline would suggest that it would be, but the plot is really confusing and the action is mediocre. Hard to recommend purchasing or renting this  Blu-ray when it is so thin on extras.
