Film Debut Kicks Off Primetime Tribute to Legendary Actress Sophia Loren

Turner Classic Movies (TCM) will host the U.S. Television premiere of filmmaker Edoardo Ponti’s short film Human Voice, starring Sophia Loren as part of the networks five-film tribute to the actress on Tuesday, April. 21. The evening is scheduled to kick off at 8 p.m. (ET) with the U.S. television debut of the internationally acclaimed Human Voice (2013), directed by Loren’s son Edoardo Ponti, based on Jean Cocteau’s iconic one woman play of the same name.

Human Voice, directed by Edoardo Ponti, tells the story of a woman in her twilight years, who rides the emotional roller coaster of her last telephone conversation with the man she loves as he is leaving her for another woman. The film earned Loren the 2014 David Di Donatello award for her performance and was also the Official Selection at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival and the 2014 HollyShorts Film Festival.

Loren’s greatest films in the primetime lineup include: Marriage Italian Style (1964), starring Loren’s longtime leading man Marcello Mastroianni; Two Women (1961), for which Loren won her first Academy Award®; The Gold of Naples (1954), director Vittorio De Sica’s hilarious six Neapolitan episodes; Man of La Mancha (1972) which paired Loren with Peter O’Toole.

In addition to her evening tribute on TCM, Loren recently appeared at the 2015 TCM Classic Film Festival for an in-depth interview with her son Edoardo Ponti about her illustrious career, which will air later this year on TCM, as well as being on hand to introduce her film, Marriage Italian Style.

Sophia Loren Tribute – Tuesday, April 21, beginning at 8 p.m. (ET)

8 p.m. (ET) – Human Voice (2013) – Set against the backdrop of Naples, Italy, in 1950, Human Voice, based on the iconic Jean Cocteau play of the same name, tells the story of Angela (Loren), a woman in her twilight years, who rides the emotional roller coaster of her last telephone conversation with the man she loves as he is leaving her for another woman.

8:30 p.m. (ET) – Marriage Italian Style (1964) – Convincingly aging from teenager to matron, Loren delivers a tour de force performance that earned her an Oscar® nomination for this Italian dramedy. As Filumena, who becomes businessman Marcello Mastroianni’s mistress for 17 years, only to face losing him to a younger woman, Loren makes the transition from childlike innocence to fiery resentment to maternal love against the backdrop of Italy’s turbulent post-war era.

11:00 p.m. (ET) – Two Women (1961) – Loren deservedly won an Oscar for her heart- rending portrayal of Italian mother who, along with her young daughter, is raped by Allied Moroccan soldiers during WW2. How they survive is an intensely moving story.

1:00 a.m. (ET) – The Gold of Napes (1954) – Director Vittorio De Sica’s hilarious six Neapolitan episodes starring Loren as the philandering wife of the pizza baker with De Sica as an avid cardplayer upstaged by an eight-year-old.

3:00 a.m. (ET) – Man of La Mancha (1972) – Starring Peter O’Toole as both Miguel de Cervantes and Don Quixote and Sophia Loren as scullery maid Aldonza in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical.
