This week the technology gods gather together in a Vegas to pat each other on the back and try to make bets on trends for the future. For every successful category launch the road is paved with numerous failures. Every year there seems to be an overarching theme; for the last few years it was 3D, prior to that it was true black contrast and cell processors in televisions. We are clearly in a transitional phase of technology with no unifying theme coming out of the show.

At first, I wasn’t going to go to Vegas for CES this year but I got an amazing deal on Orbitz to stay at the fabulous Circus Circus (once I upgrade to a suite it’ll be fine), so I’m jetting off tomorrow and will be on the ground until Friday. I missplanned so I’m going to miss the Monster Cable John Legend concert Friday night 🙁 Armed with my DayPass Wireless card, I’ll be blogging live from most of the big Press Conferences (LG, Sony, Casio, Samsung, etc.) on Wed and will give you the scoop from all the Pre-show parties, unveilings and just generally musing about Vegas. I don’t gamble and it’s always cold during CES week, but I still love The Vegas. Tomorrow (Monday) I’m just going to hang out and check out the Paris Hotel and the new Vegas Mega Hotel that just opened. Be sure to check out my twitter feed at twitter.com/malexandria for my personal take on things and the main #eclipsemagazine feed for the “official” stuff and of course my Flickr and Facebook (facebook.com/eclipsemagazine) accounts for the latest photos. I want to see a couple of shows tomorrow and Tuesday night – any recommendations? I’m leaning towards Lion King and maybe Love. So for the next few days, unless the EM Regulars chip in for Entertainment, EM will be all about Tech and Vegas. Elvis is stuck in my head now, Viva, Las Vegas, Viva…..
On a cold, dreary, wet weekend the folks at Wizard Universe got their geek love on in NYC by hosting their annual Big Apple Comic-Con event at the Pier 92/94 convention center. I dragged myself out of bed and overcame my fear of driving to NY (not so much the drive, it’s the parking nightmare)) to catch Saturday’s festivities. Attending this year’s event the one phrase that ran in my head is – I am sooo OLD! This event was refreshingly old school all the way. It was like taking a trip through memory lane, seeing all my childhood heroes like Lou Ferrigno, Gil Gerard, Taylor Dayne, Julie Newmar, Sean Young, Helen Slater, Edward Furlong, Virgil, Ric Flair, Demolition, and a ton more. The problem was all my childhood heroes are old now, which makes me feel really old and unhip, although, strangely enough Todd Bridges looks almost the same. TV’s Buck Rodgers, Gil Gerard – old. Back in the day he was smoking in that tight white jump suit.
