Three hard-riding movie adaptations of the legendary author’s novels. CATLOW – A renegade outlaw wants to pull off a gold heist but finds it hard because he’s such a wanted man by the Mexican Army, his hellcat girlfriend, an Indian war party, a vengeful killer and several hotheaded cowpokes from his former gang. Yul Brynner, Richard Crenna and Leonard Nimoy star.

THE SACKETTS – Tom Selleck, Sam Elliott and Jeff Osterhage play brothers who migrate west to make their fortunes in cattle-herding and gold prospecting. Each aims to make it on his own ? but each also stands up for the other when the going gets tough. And their guns blaze a name for themselves in untamed New Mexico territory.

CONAGHER – He conquered the range. She conquered his heart. Sam Elliott and Katharine Ross star as a cowhand and a widowed ranch owner who are drawn to each other when ruthless rustlers threaten his livelihood and her homestead.

I grew up watching westerns and while other little girls around me wanted to grow up to be dancers and models, I wanted to be a cowboy. I didn’t reach that dream, but I still love westerns and I jumped at the chance to review Warner Bros Home Video Louis L’Amour collection.

I’ll admit right now, I’d probably go to a movie to see Sam Elliot if he was doing nothing but reading the phone book. That man has a voice that can just make a woman’s knees weak–or at least it has that affect on me.  More than having a great voice, Elliot has established himself as an actor who knows how to bring a true cowboy character to life. Two movies in this Louis L’Amour collection star Sam Elliot. The Sacketts, in which he plays opposite Tom Selleck as brothers and Conagher in which he plays opposite his real life wife, Katherine Ross.

I don’t know if I would have gone to a movie just to hear Yul Brenner read a phone book, but I know I loved him in the westerns. Yul Brenner had the kind of charisma and screen presence that gave strength and depth to any character he played and his turn as the affable renegade outlaw Catlow is pure magic to watch.

The DVD collection is top quality with some nicely done digital re-mastering  of Catlow. I think any western movie buff would enjoy having this Louis L’Amour collection from Warner Home Theater as part of their own movie collection. Check out the official Warner Home Video Site to learn more about owning this collection.
