Contrary to popular belief, I do no how to read and sometimes I like to read. Sometimes I don’t just watch movies. I like learning how they are made or discover books that I think may become movies some day. So every couple of weeks I will give you a couple of books that film lovers may enjoy. I’m kicking off this column by telling you about a book called FilmCraft: Producing By Geoffrey Macnab and Sharon Swart.
The latest title in the acclaimed FilmCraft series, FilmCraft: Producing by Geoffrey Macnab and Sharon Swart, will be available from The Focal Press on January 17th. Like all titles in the series, Producing features in-depth interviews with some of the world’s most celebrated and respected film producers – most notably, Tim Bevan (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Bridget Jones’s Diary), Jeremy Thomas (The Last Empreror, Sexy Beast), Lauren Shuler Donner (X-Men series, You’ve Got Mail), Jon Landau (Titanic, Avatar), Jan Chapman (The Piano, Lantana), Jon Kilik (The Hunger Games, Babel), and Peter Aalbæk Jensen (Melancholia, Breaking the Waves). With decades of experience in film journalism, authors Macnab and Swart bring a unique tribute to film producing as they examine the often challenging task of the producer. From finding and developing a script, to sourcing financing, to seeing a film through production and then helping it find an audience, a producer must wear many hats. Some producers do it all, and some specialize in certain aspects of the job. The book’s interviews reveal how the craft’s best have managed to make a career of it.
FilmCraft: Producing is uniquely written in a format that appeals to the film student, the industry veteran and even the non-practitioner. Any fan of film will love the interview-based format with perspectives from the world’s finest producers. Along with the interviews, Producing features five Legacy sections each highlighting producing legends from the past who have shaped the way movies are made today – including David O. Selznick (Gone With the Wind), Dino De Laurentiis (La Strada, The Bible) and more! Additionally, the book is packed with stunning images from classic films and exclusive on-set photos that will thrill film lovers. FilmCraft: Producing is both a gorgeous reflection on the last few decades of filmmaking, as well as an invaluable tool for all filmmakers.
