I can’t stand it. I mean I just can’t stand all the blind hero warship of Steven Spielberg. The man hasn’t made a decent, FUN, movie in YEARS. The last Spielberg film that I actually loved was “”Schindler’s List”” and “”Amistad””. The first 30 minutes of “”Saving Private Ryan”” were simply breathtaking, too bad the rest of the film couldn’t live up to the promise shown in the first part. “”A.I.””? Don’t get me started on that preachy crapfest. Now the man, the legend, the myth, that is Steven Spielberg is back and this time he is teaming up with Tom Cruise, an actor that I love to watch – even when he’s in ponderous films like “”Vanilla Sky””.
I’ve been waiting for Spielberg to do a fun, non-preachy, popcorn flick for years and thought that’s what we would get with “”Minority Report””, a sci-fi thriller that is based on a short story by the great Sci-Fi writer, Philip K. Dick.In “”Minority Report””, Tom Cruise is Detective John Anderton, the head of an elite crime fighting unit in the year 2054. Through the use three genetically altered humans (or “”Precogs””), with ESP, the police now have the ability to predict all future crimes. Armed with this foreknowledge Cruise and his elite team can pounce on a potential murderer before they even “”think”” about committing a crime. The unit has been so successful that all crime in the city has been wiped out after only 6 years in operation. Now the ambitious Director of the project, Director Burgess (played by Max von Sydow) wants to take the project national, and turn it to a massive federal project. The federal government hires Detective Ed Witwer (Colin Farrell) to go and inspect the team and the project.Of course this all leads to an investigation of the team’s methods, the ethical questions about weather it’s ok to arrest someone for a crime that they haven’t committed, blah, blah, blah
