After his 2007 dramatic foray into the world of psychological thrillers in the movie ‘The Number 23’, Jim Carrey returned to the more familiar territory of the big screen comedy in the 2008 movie, ‘Yes Man’.Jim Carrey plays Carl Allen, a man who can’t seem to make a connection to his own life or anyone in it, that is until Carl gets talked into going to a “Say Yes” seminar given by the the charismatic Terence Bundley (Terrence Stamp). It is only when Carl embraces the concept of saying yes to anything that his life begins to change in ways he never imagined possible and gives him the courage to chase after Allison (Zooey Deschanel), the beautiful girl of his dreams.
Even though ‘Yes Man’ is a return to the field of physical comedy that Jim Carrey plays best in, it is not the same Jim Carrey of old. In ‘Yes Man’ we find a a certain level of maturity has tempered Carrey’s comedic style and given his work a different edge to it. While there are still some of the old style of in your face, frenetic antics, Carrey himself seems to have tempered this down with a more dry, sarcastic approach to his delivery.
‘Yes Man’ while funny and has an overall feel good story to tell about how we can change our own lives simply by taking on a different perspective, the storytelling and the comedy is a bit uneven and sometimes downright too absurd in places which takes away from the impact of the storyline. However if you are looking for something fun to pass the time and to be entertained by, ‘Yes Man’ delivers the goods.
The two disc DVD and Blu_Ray being offered by Warner Brothers Home Video is must have for any true Jim Carrey fan as it not only contains a high quality version of the movie, but several interesting bonus features that gives you a behind the scenes look at how Jim Carrey uses is unique style of physical comedy to bring the character of Carl Allen to life and an ultra funny gag reel.
‘Yes Man’ comes out on DVD, Blu_Ray and ON DEMAND this coming April 7, 2009. Until then check out the official ‘Yes Man’ website for more information on the movie and other ‘Yes Man’ goodies.
