Television: Sneak Peek Look at & Speculation on SUPERNATURAL 5.06 – I Believe The Children Are Our Future

In Supernatural episode 5.06 I Believe The Children Are Our Future, which is directed by Charles Beeson and written by Andrew Dabb & Daniel Loflin, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester, who are still learning to hunt together again as a team, investigate a series of odd murders that strangely resemble fairytales and urban legends. The brothers track down an 11-year-old boy named Jesse (guest star Gattlin Griffith) and realize that whatever Jesse believes in comes true. Castiel (Misha Collins) tells Sam and Dean that Jesse is a serious threat and needs to be eliminated.

Well this sounds like an exciting episode, especially given the fact that in the “Soon” promo that the CW aired at the end of 5.05 Fallen Idols Castiel tells the Winchester boys that Jesse is a human/demon hybrid and more powerful and dangerous than either one of those things.

This plot device has a bare bones resemblance to the 2005 horror movie Devour, which starred Jensen Ackles (Dean Winchester) as Jake Gray: a young man who finds out on his days following his 21^st birthday that he is the half human son of the devil and more surprisingly that the “devil” was not his father, but his mother (who was played in demon form by actress Andee Frizzell who also starred as the murderous ghost of Nurse Glockner in the Supernatural 2.19 episode, Folsom Prison Blues).

Given this vague similarity to Ackles’ movie Devour (which while he might hate, I actually like and saw the potential in), what I really want to see most in I Believe The Children Are Our Future is a little pay back time: I want to see Sam make a sarcastic reference to Dean about the movie Devour. Hey it’s only fair, the writers (or possibly Jensen Ackles ad-libbing) have taken two swipes at past projects that Jared Padalecki has been involved in – Gilmore Girls and House of Wax.

Episode 5.06 also bears a bare bones similarity to the season 3.05 episode, Bedtime Stories where the vengeful earth bound spirit of a little girl whose adult body was being kept alive through artificial means was using Grimms fairytales to harm the living. Given this similarity, I sincerely hope the writers don’t forget about this and have Dean and Sam all amazed or surprised by this kind of thing. I want to see some good continuity going on that ties past to present and helps to tie the brothers bond back together.

So, while we wait for Supernatural 5.06 I Believe The Children Are Our Future to air on the CW Network this coming Thursday, October 15^th at 9PM EST, let’s take a look at the sneak peek passed along to us by the CW Network/Warner Bros.
