Jem and the Holograms is, to be honest, a ploy to make money and sell Hasbro toys. It’s also a surprisingly sweet and sincere tale of an overnight success (literally) and the problems that arise with fame – and a story of a family at a crisis point.

Steve Jobs: Trying To Create a Portrait from Bits & Pieces!
Steve Jobs is a strange duck of a film – a look at three pivotal moments of the Apple genius’ life in the hope that it will give a full picture of the man. The three moments are the backstage events prior to three key launches of Jobs’ products: 1984’s Mackintosh, 1988’s NEXT computer and […]
Crimson Peak: 2015 Technology; 1975 Horror!
As someone who enjoyed Hammer and American International horror films in the seventies, I found Crimson Peak to be breathtaking both as an exercise in Gothic horror and as an application of modern resources to a very traditional type of tale. Though Crimson Peak is a horror tale with ghosts, it is not really a […]

Everest – The Mountain Always Has The Last Word!
Everest is not a movie you want to see in IMAX if you have a problem with heights – the 3D is terrifyingly good, even when the big storm hits. Otherwise, it’s a movie that is easy to appreciate – even if ‘enjoy’ might not be the exact word to describe the experience you’ll have […]

The Visit – Rod Serling-esque Twist Wasted!
After seeing M. Night Shyamalan move into the television arena so well with the very good Wayward Pines, The visit comes as more than a bit of a letdown. True, it has a lovely, elegant twist – one of Shyamalan’s best – but you have to wade through a lot of boring to get there.
Straight Outta Compton – Mostly The Straight $#!+!
F. Gary Gray’s Straight Outta Compton is a pretty straightforward recounting of the rising of hardcore rappers N.W.A. – and their almost equally speedy disintegration. It also whitewashes an important aspect of the group’s life in the early days – the over the top misogyny – while being very open about a member’s death from […]
Ridiculous Trailer: Ride Along 2
After Ride Along racked up some impressive numbers over its first weekend, Universal Pictures was quick to greenlight a sequel – and, it seems, everyone involved was quick to get production rolling. Ride Along 2 has its first trailer and it is every bit as off-the-wall ridiculous as anything we saw in the first movie […]

Trainwreck – Funny Woman; Funny Movie!
Amy is a hardworking, hard drinking, hard playing woman. If she wasn’t a woman, she could be any of a thousand guys we’ve seen before in movies and on TV – that’s what makes Trainwreck so much fun. Written by and starring Amy Schumer, and directed by Judd Apatow, Trainwreck carries the raunch-with-heart stamp that […]
