Filmmaker and YouTube Maven Casey Neistat Launches Social Media App Beme

In true Casey Neistat fashion today on his YouTube vlog launched his newest venture, the social media app Beme (pronounced Beam).

Casey explains his thoughts about how social media is supposed to be a digital representation of who you are but instead it has become a more handcrafted, contrived version that in the end is made to sort of look like who you are but maybe not completely represent the real person.

Neistat is hoping to change all that with Beme. It strips away the ability to do a traditional selfie. You won’t hold your phone out up to your face or spend much time looking at your phone at all. With Beme you place your phone against your body or hold it against the wall and the proximity sensor will respond to the action to take a snapshot or video. The point is to stay engaged with the life in front of you and not your phone. You can capture a moment to share with your friends without having to look down at your phone and miss the world and life as it is happening right in front of you.

You are very in the moment with Beme. You make a video or take a photo without looking away because Beme will access the proximity sensor in your phone to trigger the start and stop of recording and then uploads what has been captured. There isn’t any editing or crafting your content unlike the camera for youtube there’s only sharing and getting a response from those who have experienced your contribution.

Not unlike Snapchat’s self destruct mode, your Beme will be seen and then instantly deleted. You are able to respond to someone else’s Beme letting them know what you think but it won’t be with hearts or likes. From what was shown in the demo it looks like for now it’s only a snapshot and not a video response but I won’t know for sure until I get that coveted golden ticket known as the unlock code.

For now an unlock code will be revealed by Casey during his vlogs or if you are lucky enough to know someone who already has access to Beme they can send you an invite to let you in. Either way Beme is sure to set the social media world on fire and hopefully help those of us stuck looking down to lift our heads and take notice of the roses. Maybe even stop and smell a few along the way.

Beme is available to download in the Apple App Store today http://apple.co/1OjdMFR. Though Casey suggests waiting until next week for a more polished update I suggest getting it today so you can reserve your username because I see them going fast!
