THE VAMPIRE DIARIES

The Vampire Diaries, developed for television by Kevin Williamson, is based on a series of novels by L.J. Smith and follows teen Elena Gilbert who is torn between vampire brothers Stefan and Damon Salvatore.  Fans of the novels were quick to criticize major differences between the books and the television series, even though the series was never meant to be an exact replica of the novels.  And although one might be quick to dismiss The Vampire Diaries as yet another teen drama full of never-ending angst and longing stares, the truth is the series offers rich characterizations, great story pacing, and a talented, charismatic cast.  Despite the inevitable comparisons to Twilight, this series brings in plenty of unique elements of its own as it offers a pleasant balance between teen drama, horror, and the supernatural.  It stars Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, and Ian Somerhalder.

Thursday’s episode is titled ‘Bloodlines’.  The official description is as follows:  Stefan uncovers a startling clue to the past:  Damon (Ian Somerhalder) takes a trip to Georgia, where he surprises an old flame, Bree (guest star Gina Torres, “Eli Stone”) and enlists her help to figure out how to open the tomb. In the process, Damon comes face to face with someone who is determined to make him pay for past wrongs. Stefan (Paul Wesley) opens up to Grams (guest star Jasmine Guy) in his effort to help Bonnie (Katarina Graham) overcome her fears and accept her powers. While researching his history paper in the public library, Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) meets a cute-but-geeky girl named Anna (guest star Malese Jow, “Hannah Montana”) who has her own theories on the folklore of Mystic Falls. When Damon returns from Georgia, Stefan is waiting with news that will change their world. Nina Dobrev and Sara Canning also star. Dave Barrett directed the episode written by Kevin Williamson & Julie Plec, with a story by Sean Reycraft.

SUPERNATURAL

Of course, Thursday night would not be complete without The CW’s veteran hit series Supernatural, now in its fifth season.  This uniquely creative series which is equal parts family drama, horror, comedy, and suspense is the story of brothers Sam and Dean Winchester who have devoted their lives to keeping regular folks safe from the things that go bump in the night. Each season has managed to raise the bar, taking the story in fascinating directions that keep the viewer guessing, while never losing focus on its heart and soul, which is the best brotherly relationship to be depicted on television in a long time.  The series has never suffered the standard sophomore slump, nor has it stagnated with repetitive, predictable storylines.  And the fact that it is now in its fifth season should not scare away new viewers since it isn’t too hard to get up to speed.  As the second half of the season begins, the Winchesters are smack in the middle of trying to stop the Apocalypse.  That’s right, THE Apocalypse, complete with factions of angels and demons all vying for power and control over humanity while the Big Bad himself, Lucifer, is also walking the earth.  The series stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki.

Thursday’s episode is titled “Sam, Interrupted”.  The official description is as follows: Sam and Dean check into a mental hospital:  A former hunter named Martin, who is currently institutionalized, calls Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) for help investigating a case in the mental hospital. The brothers get themselves admitted as patients to check out the mysterious monster that is attacking the patients, but their incarceration pushes both to the breaking point as they unleash their inner demons against each other.
