Amazon’s Comrade Detective is a Romanian propaganda tool in the guise of a cop show – the masters for which have been painstakingly restored by the Romanian Film Preservation Society – which has been rediscovered and dubbed into English by a host of first-rate American actors.

Or, it’s an American series that imagines what a Romanian propaganda tool in the guise of a cop show would look (and sound) like.

It’s also bloody brilliant!

Comrade Detective is a new half-hour Amazon series that follows two Romanian detectives as they attempt to solve the murder of one of their own, Nikita Ionesco.

Set in 1985, the series, shot in Romanian and overdubbed in English, is rife with Communist propaganda as Detectives Gregor Anghel (Florin Piersic Jr.) and Iosef Baciu (Corneliu Ulici) – voiced by Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt) – work the case.

Comrade Detective is now streaming on Amazon Prime.

The Walk – A Charming Ascent into a Kind of Madness!

On August 6th, 1974, Philippe Petit, a French high wire artist, hung a wire between the twin towers of the World Trade Center and walked it not once, not twice, but three-and-a-half times. The story of the famous walk was the subject of an Oscar®-winning documentary, Man on Wire.

The Walk tackles the subject somewhat more intimately. Based on Petit’s book, To Reach the Clouds, Robert Zemeckis’ film approaches the story from Petit’s point of view. It is both charming and terrifying (not a movie to see in IMAX if you have a fear of heights – the 3D is… intimidating).

Sin City: A Dame To Kill For – Would-be Mighty, Mega-Noir!

When Sin City came out, seemingly eons ago, the idea of a film being almost entirely CG was something that hadn’t really been done to such an extent. It was visually groundbreaking, technologically breathtaking, and for fans of film noir, exhilarating. A Dame To Kill for is still visually arresting and mega-noir, but its impact comes more from the performance of Eva Green than anything else.

Robert Zemeckis’ 3D/IMAX 3D Caper The Walk Wraps Production!

Forty years ago today, a French tightrope artist named Philippe Petit walked from one World Trade Center tower to the other on an illegal wire. It was a caper worthy of Mission: Impossible and the subject of an award-winning documentary, Man on Wire. But neither Petit’s book, To Reach The Clouds, nor Man on Wire could do what Robert Zemeckis is about to do – put you up there with Petit in a 3D/IMAX 3D film.

It’s called The Walk and stars, among others, Joseph Gordon-Levitt (as Petit), Ben Kinglsey (Iron Man 3), James Badge Dale (Flight) and Charlotte Le Bon (The Hundred-Foot Journey). The Walk will premiere on October 5, 2015. Further details await just beyond the jump.

Icy Cool, Fiery Hot Trailer: Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame To Kill For!

When Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller’s Sin City came out, it was hailed as innovative, a work of genius. For the follow-up, the two have collaborated to adapt the Sin City graphic novel, A Dame To Kill For – and Miller’s name has been added to the title, hence: Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame To Kill For. The trailer has the same black-and-white-with-splashes-of-color noir look of the original film and is cool as all get out.
