La La Land Rejuvenates Movie Musicals!

La La Land is a strange beast – influenced equally by Hollywood musicals like Singing in the Rain (to which there is a fun reference) and Jacques Demy’s The Umbrellas of Cherbourg – that is something more than mere colorful fun.

Damien Chazelle’s second film is the story of two struggling artists – jazz pianist Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) and wannabe actor Mia (Emma Stone) – who don’t exactly meet cute, then do before going on to have a very real relationship (cleverly camouflaged as piece of fluff musical).

Her last audition lasted five seconds; he got fired from his lounge gig playing piano – at Christmas! Neither’s dream of making it in La La Land is deterred. Sounds like a movie musical to me.

Damien Chazelle’s new film couldn’t be further away from his feature debut, Whiplash, but it looks pretty amazing in the new trailer, Dreamers. Check it out after the break.

La La Land will be in theaters on December 9th.

We’ve heard Ryan Gosling sing in the first teaser for Damien Chazelle’s La La Land so it’s only fair that co-star Emma Stone should be given the opportunity to reply.

The second teaser for the film just makes sense – and adds a little more insight into what the film will be (a Hollywood musical, but not quite). Check it out after the break.

Damien Chazelle’s La La Land will be in theaters on December 16th.

When Damien Chazelle was asked how he planned to follow up his brilliant debut feature, whiplash, he said he’d like to do a musical.

He wasn’t lying.

Check out the trailer Chazelle’s second feature, La La Land, starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, after the break. It’s incredibly charming. La La Land opens on December 16th.

Philosophical Trailer: Irrational Man!

irrational-man-stone-phoenix

In Woody Allen’s new film, Irrational Man, Joaquin Phoenix stars as a philosophy professor who seems overwhelmed by something even deeper than despair. Even a perky student played by Emma Stone can’t seem to lift his spirits.

Then, suddenly, he springs to life – amazing everyone, though no one more than himself – as can be seen in the first trailer for Irrational Man, following the jump. Irrational Man will be in theaters on July 24th. Continue reading Philosophical Trailer: Irrational Man!

I Say Hello You Say Goodbye Trailer: Aloha!

Aloha - Cooper, Stone

A romantic comedy about a military contractor, his ex and the Air Force watchdog assigned to keep him out of trouble? Nope, it’s not based on a Nicholas Sparks novel (though it does star a few alumni of Sparks-based movies).

Aloha was written and directed by Cameron Crowe. The cast includes Bradley Cooper, Rachel McAdams, Emma Stone, Danny McBride, Alec Baldwin, Bill Murray and John Krasinski. Check out the trailer after the jump – it looks like it deserves its A-list cast.

Aloha opens May 29th.

Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance): A Fabulous Fiction Rooted In Truth!

birdman

Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) is a brilliant bombastic, bizarre skewering of: superhero movies, egocentric actors, actors’ insecurities, Broadway, Broadway critics, and pretty much all things entertainment.

The story of Riggan Thomson’s (Michael Keaton) effort to be taken seriously as an actor/director/playwright after having starred in three superhero movies twenty years ago – Birdman is directed as a continuous shot (which is difficult because the film takes place over a considerably longer period that its two-hour running time).

First Teaser: Birdman!

In Birdman, Michael Keaton plays a man who was once famous for playing an iconic superhero. Nothing he’s done before or since has impacted that fame and he’s pretty much considered washed up – but now he’s trying to mount a Broadway play and must overcome his ego, family troubles and, of course, the fact that everyone thinks of him as Birdman, to make it work.

Birdman is the next film from Alejandro González Iñárritu (Babel, Biutiful). Check out the first teaser after the jump.

Movie Trailer: Magic In The Moonlight!

Magic in the Moonlight

The one-liner for Magic in the Moonlight is, ‘A romantic comedy about an Englishman brought in to help unmask a possible swindle. Personal and professional complications ensue.’

Colin Firth plays a brilliant illusionist who is tasked with debunking Emma Stone’s apparent psychic. The trailer – following the jump – suggests he may be getting in over his head. Magic in the Moonlight opens on July 25th – but probably not wide.
