Academy Award-winning filmmaker Michael Moore is getting ready to explore the wonders that is capitalism. He called upon the press outlets of four major markets across the country to see the debut of an exclusive trailer of his new documentary and to participate in a theatre stunt. The four markets chosed were Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, & Our Nation’s Capital – Washington, D.C. I descended to the AMC Loews Georgetown theatre on Friday evening to see what the buzz was all about.
The theatregoers were watching the usual previews for Armored, District 9, and Gamer among other movies. Then, came the trailer from Paramount Vantage. Michael address the audience that he was working on a new documentary. Then, he was asking that audience that we are collecting donations for a worthwhile cause. All of a sudden, a group of people came down the aisles with T-shirts saying "Save Our CEOs". While the group were trying to collect donations, Michael stated the list of banks the money was going to. Among the banks named were Wells Fargo, Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase & Company, Citigroup, & Morgan Stanley. Some of the people in the theatre were none too pleased to donate since the taxpayers already donated over $700 Billion since the fall of 2008.
Here’s how Michael informed us that Friday night…. "Hi, I’m Michael Moore. Instead of using this time to tell you about my new movie I’d like to take a moment and ask you to join me in helping our fellow Americans. The downturn in the economy has hurt many people, people who have had no choice but to go on government assistance. Yet our welfare agencies can only do so much. That’s why I’m asking you to reach into your pockets right now and lend a hand. Ushers will be coming down the aisles to collect your donations for Citibank, Bank of America, AIG, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan and a host of other needy banks and corporations. Won’t you please give generously? Now, I know what you’re thinking – I already gave at the bailout. And I know you did, but even if you’ve given in the past, give some more. It will make you feel… good."
This stunt was all about promoting the new untitled documentary to be released on October 2nd – 366 days after the Senate voted to hand Wall Street the largest bailout in the history of the United States. By the way, all money that was donated that evening is actually going to Capital Area Food Bank, a much worthwhile cause! I have a feeling that the next trailer will feature the audience’s reactions when it came to the stunt. Love him or hate him, Michael Moore never cease to make us think every once in a while.
