Frida

A cinematic recounting of the life and hard times of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo benefits immensely from the imaginative direction of Julie Taymor.

Salma Hayek, who spent years getting this project off the ground, plays Kahlo with zest, and the whole picture bursts with a passion unique to the arts community. Mangled at a young age in a trolley accident, the fiery Kahlo drew endless inspiration from her physical pain and transferred it to canvas. In later years, emotional pains wrought by her adulterous husband, Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina), inspired even greater art. First-rate performances from both Hayek and Molina are rivaled only by Taymor
