1764. A mystery beast has been terrorising the region of Gevaudan, France. All of France has been shaken by the inexplicable killings, rumours abound and Louis XV fears the panic may destabilise his regime.
Enter Chevalier Gregoire de Fronsac, (soldier, naturalist, explorer) and his faithful Indian companion, Mani; summoned to hunt and kill the beast. Fronsac disputes claims the culprit is of supernatural origin and, after examining the evidence, insists something more prosaic is at work than the devil.
The pair face resistance; aristocratic bigotry against Mani, political pressure to resolve the matter and enemies of the king trying to exploit the bloodshed and provoke revolution. But the slaughter continues and so the warriors press on.
They cross paths with many nobles, including the one-armed Jean Francois de Morangias and young Thomas d’Apcher, who eagerly joins them on the hunt. Following a string of clues, Fronsac becomes entwined with the chaste Marianne, sister of Morangias, and a courtesan with a hidden agenda.
Tired of getting no results, the King sends another hunter to nab the monster. The ring-in immediately captures a wolf and claims he has killed the Beast; a pretence the King endorses.
Ignoring the efforts at a cover up, Fronsac and Mani lead one final hunt for the elusive creature. Nothing will prepare them for what they discover, or the cost of the truth.
