If Cheech & Chong had made a Jason Bourne movie it might have looked a lot like American Ultra. It’s the story of stoner convenience store clerk Mike Howell – who discovers he’s actually a CIA super-agent who’s been sequestered in Limon, West Virginia following the Ultra Project shut down.

When a young hotshot CIA assistant director decides to eliminate Mike, things get out of hand really quickly.

Mike (Jesse Eisenberg) is the prototypical stoner/convenience store clerk – or so it seems. When a CIA agent (Connie Britton) makes a purchase while spouting what sounds to Mike like gibberish, his first response is, ‘Is that a lyric from something?’

But when he catches two guys messing with his car, suddenly he’s Jason Bourne – and the guys messing with car (CIA agents, WTF?) are dead. When he tells his girlfriend, Phoebe (Kristen Stewart), her first response is ‘That’s awesome.’ (Clearly she doesn’t believe him.)

Now Mike and Phoebe are in a situation – life, death, the future of the world at stake, yadda-yadda-yadda.

American Ultra was written by Max Landis (Chronicle) and directed by Nima Nourizadeh (Project X). It opens on August 21st. Check out the trailer after the jump.
