Phiona Metusi is a Ugandan girl who rose from the slum/ghetto town of Katwe in Uganda to become a champion chess player.

Her story – as adapted for film by writer William Wheeler and director Mira Nair – rising above the clichés of ‘the sports story’ by virtue of being true and being adapted with both precision and love. It is as close to a flawless film as I’ve ever seen.

Global media company Turner has entered into multi-year licensing agreements for the Star Wars movie collection through unprecedented domestic deals with The Walt Disney Studios and 20th Century Fox that grant TNT & TBS the exclusive linear basic cable and companion ad-supported on-demand rights to Star Wars. The agreement with Disney for 10 films includes the network premiere windows to last year’s record-breaking Star Wars: The Force Awakens and this year’s highly anticipated Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which opens in theaters on December 16, 2016. “The Star Wars movies and characters are beloved across generations, captivating audiences and breaking box office records around the globe for nearly four decades,” said Deborah K. Bradley, executive vice president of networks optimization, content strategy and commercialization for Turner. “Through this deal, TNT and TBS will be the exclusive basic cable home of one of the most iconic, enduring and valuable movie franchises of all time, giving viewers the chance to watch this amazing collection from the very beginning.”

Dream Clips: Queen of Katwe!

QOK

A Ugandan girl from a poor family discovers chess and becomes the Ugandan champion.

Queen of Katwe is more than just a coming of age story, or the story of an unlikely hero – it’s a story in which the game of chess is a metaphor for life and provides the first opportunity Phiona has to actually make a plan for herself.

Disney has released a couple of key clips from the film that give a glimpse of Phiona in more thoughtful moments. As well, the studio has released photos that show the actors and the real people they play. You can check them all out after the break.

Pete’s Dragon Is Magical!

Petes-Dragon-Movie-Disney-2016

The original Pete’s Dragon was a hybrid live-action/animated film with an animated dragon that attempted to recapture the vibe of Disney’s big hit Mary Poppins. It didn’t quite make it and so it’s joined the ranks of the charming but slight Disney family films that Mary Poppins moved above.

As the choice for a remake, it’s pretty smart because it takes a property with no real baggage and actually does something with it (unlike the live action Cinderella which was a much bigger gamble).

The result is a family film that is pure Disney magic.
