I had much the same reaction to The Great Gatsby that I had to Les Miserables – I could probably enumerate a ton of flaws, but I just don’t care because the overall experience is spectacular.
F. Scott Fitzgerald’s slim novel presented cool characters with understandable motivations and simultaneously captured the essence of an era – the 1920s. It was a tale of love vs. reality with a central character who could be hopelessly corrupt and a shining beacon of hope at the same time.
The GeekScholars Movie Newspodcast kicks off May 2013 by giving a quick snapshot of all the major releases, including what they are excited about, which ones they’ll personally skip, and their predictions for how each film will fare on Rotten Tomatoes. The folks at Warner Brothers weren’t kidding when they said they had a full slate for 2013. The presentation started with the head of domestic distribution telling the audience that Warner Brothers Pictures is the only studio to have over $1 billion dollars in Box office business every year for 12 years and that with any luck this will be “lucky 13.” Instead of having actors do the introductions they shined the spotlight on their directors. The presentation was a bit disappointing as we did not get much new footage that we haven’t seen before and it wasn’t focused. Curiously missing, or maybe not was any finished footage for the next installment of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. But we did get quick glimpses during The highlight was the premiere of the brand .They showcased an ambitious slate that had a nice mix of franchises, original IP and of course what everyone was looking forward to seeing – new Man of Steel footage.

We’re deep into summer blockbuster territory, so this week on GeekScholars Movie News, we take a look at all of the hot movies coming out next month, and we’ll tell you which ones are not to be missed and which ones we believe are gonna flop harder than Zach Galifianakis jumping spread eagle into a pool.
We also have some fantastic preview reviews for you to listen in on as we give out grades to the teaser trailer for Bond 23, also known as Skyfall, and Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of The Great Gatsby, starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
After that, the GeekScholars all chime in on Will Smith’s return to box office glory in the highily entertaining Men in Black 3, then we finish up the show with some quickies regarding Red 2, Robocop, Iron Man 3, and Thor 2.
