NBC’s The Event returns tonight [8/7C] with a two-hour mid-season premiere that is, frankly, a letdown. Stripping it of its unconventional, time-hopping structure [because everyone allegedly found it confusing] has also stripped it of its imagination.
With the revelation that the aliens’ outbound message reads, ‘preparations are being made for your arrival,’ The Event sinks from the level of an intriguing and unusual series to the level of a straightforward and much duller alien invasion piece.
The Event [NBC, Mondays, 9/8C] is a smart, complex and thoroughly entertaining new series. The premiere is easily the best pilot of the season. With a cast of dozens [if you include guest stars], this is a series that can provide at least a couple characters with whom everyone in the audience can identify, while the complexity of the premiere episode turns out to be much easier to follow than expected – despite the way it plays with various sequences in the past and present.
Here’s a promotion that makes more than a little sense: NBC and DC are teaming up for a unique campaign – involving some of DC’s most important game changing comics mini-series – tied to the premiere of NBC’s conspiracy blockbuster series The Event.
Hal Holbrook, best known for his one-man show, Mark Twain Tonight, has joined the cast of recurring actors on NBC’s The Event – the sprawling conspiracy series that the network hopes will generate the kind of buzz and loyalty achieved by ABC’s Lost.
Of all the TV premieres to hit Comic-Con 2010, The Event is the one that had the most – and the best – buzz! Now NBC is offering five lucky cities [or towns] the chance to host an exclusive screening of the show’s epic pilot episode by simply demanding it on Eventful.com.
