AMC’s Breaking Bad is the second cancer-related TV series to have a full season DVD set released this week. The series would seem, on the surface, to be about a terminally ill middle class guy trying to provide for his family after his death – through cooking up a unique version of crystal meth. Instead, it’s about how that basically decent man – a high school chemistry teacher who could have been much more – has a knack for making exactly the wrong decisions and is devolving from decency to hardcore criminal.

Showtime’s relentlessly peculiar comedy The Big C is now available on DVD and Blu-ray. Centered around the character of Cathy Jamison, it is the story of how a woman diagnosed with terminal cancer [stage four melanoma] only learns how to live once she learns she’s dying.

The story of Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens marks the first time that Elmore Leonard’s work has worked on television. Thanks to cable network FX, the series has been allowed to depict the quirkiness, humor and unexpected bursts violence of Leonard’s work – as well as his crackling dialogue. The first season DVD includes some excellent bonus material that goes into detail about that was done, making it well worth investigating if you’re a fan of great crime fiction and TV.

It’s that time of the year where we all sit back and take stock on the year that just went by. I have to say this has been a pretty, ok year personally and professionally. Entertainment wise, I think it goes down as one of the worst years in a long time – bad movies, bad tv, and no-talent reality tv “stars” behaving badly. I’m going to look on the bright side and give you the best Blu-rays of the year. All are available in stores now, so this list also doubles as a Holiday buyer’s guide. With limited verbiage on my part and in no particular order here are the best Blu-ray’s of 2009.
Wizard of Oz 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collection
The Wizard of Oz Deluxe Set could have easily been the best Disk of 2009; it’s an absolutely gorgeous transfer for one of the greatest movies of all time. And this set is feature packed. Warner Home Video cheaped out in two ways 1) They included a horrible print of the Dreamer of Oz TV movie with John Ritter and 2) Most of the extras are in Standard Def. But there’s hours of good stuff wade through.
