Saving Mr. Banks Brilliance falters under the weight of Marry Poppins

After attending Disney’s excellent D23 presentation of upcoming films, Saving Mr. Banks quickly became one of the few films that I really looked forward to seeing. It has all the elements that I love in movies – heart, comedy, colorful cinematography and it is about the creative process. That twenty-minute preview and surprise ending with the great Richard Sherman, Jason Schwartzman, and B.J. Novak doing a live performance of Let’s Fly A Kite is one the highlights of my year. The movie met and exceeded my expectations in every way.

Saving Mr. Banks: Making Mary Poppins Through a Glass Disney!

The story of how Walt Disney persuaded P.L. Travers to sell him the movie rights to Mary Poppins is the subject of Saving Mr. Banks. It’s a tale of saving in many respects – it saved Mrs. Travers from bankruptcy; saved Mr. Disney from breaking a promise to his daughters, and its Christmas season release may have saved Disney Studios from missing out on awards nominations – and possible wins. For all that, it’s a remarkably effective, surprisingly direct movie with a lot of superb characters interacting in ways you might not have expected in a Disney movie.

Trailer: Saving Mr. Banks–How Walt Disney Got To Make Mary Poppins!

Mary Poppins is one of the most beloved films ever made – but it was far from the easiest that Walt Disney ever produced. The story of how Disney came to be able to make the movie is a wonderful story in its own right and the first trailer for Saving Mr. Banks, the movie that tells that story, is now available.

The movie stars Tom Hanks as Walt Disney and Emma Thompson as the author of the Mary Poppins stories, P.L. Travers. Check out the trailer after the jump. Saving Mr. Banks will be released on December 13th, 2013.
