In this version, a university professor gets in deep with three very deadly members of the gambling underworld. This version has a unique take on character that, just barely, allows for the possibility of a hopeful (if not necessarily happy) finale.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes Doesn’t Monkey Around!

The trailers for Rise of the Planet of the Apes haven’t exactly been riveting, so I was lukewarm on checking it out. On the other hand, seeing a would-be blockbuster that wasn’t trying to artificially its box office with 3D levies was appealing.

In a plain, old-fashioned theater – no 3D, no special big screen or umpty-ump speakers pumping up the volume – Rise of the Planet of the Apes won me over by just being a decent movie.

First Look: Fox’s First Trailer for Rise of the Planet of the Apes!

Pierre Boulle’s famous novel, Monkey Planet, gave rise to a franchise that just would not go away – spawning Planet of the Apes, its theatrical sequels and the Tim Burton remake [and a related videogame]; a live-action, primetime TV series and an animated Saturday morning series. So, why on earth would anyone think yet another attempt to make something out of the concept would be a good idea?

Unlikely as it seems, the trailer for Rise of the Planet of the Apes actually looks pretty good – intriguing, even – and sufficiently different to be worth a look.
