Most of Syfy’s Saturday night original movies are fun in that cheesy, ‘50s sci-fi/horror, B-movie kind of way. Some are brilliantly campy and others are just plain awful. This Saturday’s Red: Werewolf Hunter [9/8C] is one of their best. Part of the reason is that the writing is smarter; part of it is that it has a pretty decent cast. The key element is the star – Felicia Day [The Guild, Dollhouse, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-long Blog] plays Virginia ‘Red’ Sullivan, the latest in a long line of werewolf hunters.
You probably know her as Slayer-in-Training Vi from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, or Mag from Dollhouse, or, if you’re a gamer, Codex from the long-running web series, The Guild. She’s a fine violinist and has a Bachelor’s Degree in Science for Mathematics. Plus, she was Billy’s crush, Penny, in Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog – where she sang like an angel.
Because she’s a genuine Renaissance woman, you might think she’d be a bit full of herself, so, of course, she turns out to be the loveliest, most grounded, fun person to chat with. Not only that, she’s turning up on Syfy in two roles – one in Eureka, and the lead in Syfy’s TV-movie, Red: Werewolf Hunter [Saturday, 9/8C]. She spoke with a number of bloggers/journalists on Monday and went well beyond the expected hour – to the enjoyment of all.
Is there a better month of the year for monster movies than October? Of course not! Which is probably why Syfy is premiering two primo wolf-based Saturday night screamers: Red: Werewolf Hunter [starring Felicia Day, pictured above, in action] and Monsterwolf. Monsterwolf premieres on October 9th and Red: Werewolf Hunter debuts on October 30th – the night before Hallowe’en.
