The SAG-AFTRA Foundation announced today it will bestow its Actors Inspiration Award to critically-acclaimed actress and philanthropist Kate Winslet, highlighting her career achievements and honoring her charitable work.

The nonprofit’s Patron of the Artists Awards celebration will also honor director/producer Judd Apatow, Academy Award® winning director Kathryn Bigelow, and Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos for their roles in supporting actors and performing artists in their careers.

The event takes place Thursday, November 9, at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills.

Kathryn Bigelow is not afraind to step and make films that have something to say. Like The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty, Bigelow is once again tackling today’s issues through a true story from our recent past.

Detroit will be in theaters on August 4th.

BAFTA To Honor Bigelow and Kingsley!

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) will honor Kathryn Bigelow and Sir Ben Kingsley at the 2013 BAFTA Los Angeles Britannia Awards on Saturday, November 9, 2013. Bigelow will the John Schlesinger Britannia Award for Excellence in Directing, while Kingsley will be given the Albert R. Broccoli Britannia Award for Worldwide Contribution to Entertainment.

George Clooney was previously announced as receiving this year’s Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film. The 2013 BAFTA Los Angeles Britannia Awards will be televised live on BBC America as part of a two-hour block that will include footage of the Britannia Awards Red Carpet.

MOVIES/TELEVISION: Oscar® History Is Made – Bigelow Wins!

Movie history has just been made. First, Kathryn Bigelow won the Academy Award® for Directing and moments later, another Oscar® for Best Film – she was a producer on The Hurt Locker, not just the director. Fellow nominee, James Cameron, was one of the first to stand – leading to a full on standing ovation for his ex.

Bigelow Wins

Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin were solid but not brilliant co-hosts, picking up steam as the ceremonies proceeded. Their onscreen chemistry was good but they had a tendency to dispense their banter shade a shade too quickly.

As per usual, my choices for the awards were not entirely spot on, but in most cases, wins by other nominees could not possibly be considered disappointments. My thoughts follow the jump.

MOVIE REVIEWS: The Hurt Locker – War and the Effects of War!

Ever since Kathryn Bigelow made a splash with her “vampire western,” it was thought that she would one day produce a masterpiece. That day has come. The Hurt Locker is one of the year’s best films.


Set in Iraq, The Hurt Locker is not about any particular war – this one just happens to be handy and provides an immediate frame of reference. Rather, this is a film about the effects of war on those who fight in them – in this case, members of a team of bomb experts.
