Normally, you would think that releasing a movie on the same weekend as the Harry Potter juggernaut would be nuts, even as counterprogramming – and yet, Disney has done just that. Winnie the Pooh is as unlikely a challenger for box office as you could find in these circumstances, but it’s a charming, whimsical film that is perfectly tuned for a family audience.

Based on the stories by A.A. Milne, Winnie the Pooh is about as unpretentious a film as you will ever see. It’s a collection of three separate, short tales that are blended into a continuous narrative that never feels forced, nor precious – two things it could have easily become.
