The Producers Guild of america has announced that it will award Loving – the story of interracial couple Richard and Mildred Loving’s fight to be together as a married couple in their hometown – the Stanley Kramer Award.
The Stanley Kramer Award is given to honor a production, producer or other individuals whose achievement or contribution illuminates and raises public awareness of important social issues.
The Debt is a sometimes haunting fiction that starts out as a celebration of the publication of a book that chronicles an important moment in the history of Israel – the death of a Nazi war criminal known as the Surgeon of Birkenau.
Coraline is the little 3-D film that could. Although it wasn’t any kind of a tentpole event, it quietly made almost $115 million in its theatrical run. Not bad for a 3-D stop-action animation film. The story, about a little girl who discovers an alternate world where her Other Parents dote on her – as opposed to her real parents, who don’t seem to care – is one of author Neil Gaiman’s most loved stories. Although it underwent several changes in its journey to film, Gaiman heartily approved of the film version which really does capture the feel of the book beautifully.
This 2-Disc Collector’s Edition of Coraline includes both 2-D and 3-D versions – though the 3-D is the kind with the glasses with the green and red lenses. When they [-whoever they may be] figure out how to transfer modern 3-D to DVD, I’ll be one happy camper. At least the DVD includes four pairs of glasses…
The trailer for Atonement had me giddy with excitement I thought I was going to be in for a truly epic love story that spanned time, distance, war, betrayal, but what I got was this anemic, pretentious, non-epic turd. I love Keira Knightley (Cecilia Tallis) but frankly she can’t act and it’s proven once again here.Her face looked strangely like it’s been CGI’ed.Her mouth moves but there’s no expression in her cheeks or eyes. It looks so plastic that it was creepy. And that’s a word I’ll be using a lot throughout this review – CREEPY.The entire experience of watching this film felt CREEPY.There’s the CREEPY friend of her brother, Leon Tallis (played by Patrick Kennedy), a wealthy owner of a Chocolate factory, Paul Marshall (Benedict Cumberbatch) who turns out to be a pedophile. Then there is Cecilia’s creepy looking 13 year old sister Briony Tallis (Saoirse Ronan), and her visiting cousins, these two curly haired ugly looking kids and their older sister Lola Quincey (Juno Temple) who looked 11 or 12, but they strangely dressed her up to look older.Think Jon Bonnet Ramsey.
