The 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who was celebrated, in spectacular fashion, with Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor – the story of the day The Doctor ended the Time Wars and the Warrior Doctor who did it. The home video release is out today and, if you loved The Day of the Doctor – and the minisodes that preceded it online – this will make a fine edition to your Doctor Who library.
BBC America’s record-setting 50th anniversary special episode of Doctor Who – The Day of the Doctor – comes to home video on December 10th. The Day of the Doctor gave BBC America is largest rating ever and the Monday night theatrical event finished second in overall box office for the evening and topped The Hunger Games: Catching Fire in average gross per theater.
The Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor home video release will include: both prequel webisodes – The Night of the Doctor and The Last Day; the fifty-minute special Doctor Who Explained; a behind the scenes featurette; the San Diego Comic-Con trailer, and the Doctor Who 50the Anniversary teaser trailer.

The Day of the Doctor, the 50th Anniversary special that set The Doctor on a new course was BBC America’s highest-rated performer with three-and-a-half million viewers over the course of the premiere and primetime encore. It also ranked number one on Twitter for the day; was Tumblr’s number one event, ever; set the record for a Fathom Events theatrical events, and set a Guinness World Record for largest ever simulcast for a TV drama.
The debut of Atlantis, a cheerful spear & sandal/scif-fi-fantasy romp based in a re-imagining of Greek myths and legends, garnered the best ever ratings for a Supernatural Saturday premiere – making the day a complete success for the network. The BBC and BBC America have released new of photos from Doctor Who’s 50th Anniversary Special: The Day of the Doctor. Stunning revelations include mixed Doctor/Companion pairings; historical figures (Queen Elizabeth I); returning monsters (Zygons! Daleks!); three different sonic screwdrivers; the return of head of UNIT, Kate Stewart, and so much more (note a certain scarf in the background of one photo) that it’s hard to believe that no major spoilers are given.

BBC America is premiering Atlantis, a series set in the realm of the mythical lost city, following an encore presentation of Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor on Saturday, November 23rd at 9/8C). The series follows the adventures of Jason, a young man whose search for his missing father takes him to another world (and possibly another time) – the world of Atlantis – where he encounters events and figures of a version of Greek mythology. The series puts a new spin on characters like Pythagoras, Hercules, Medusa and King Minos – there are creatures of myth (think the Minotaur) and magic is real.
Melding mythology and classic spear-and-sandal elements in a unique manner, Atlantis comes from the creators of such BBC hits as Merlin and Misfits. For more details, check out the press release after the jump.
See the 50th Anniversary Doctor Who Special, The Day of the Doctor in 3D! BBC America announced this morning that there will be two RealD® 3D screenings of Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor – one as part of the global simulcast of the program on Saturday, November 23rd, and one on Monday, November 25th. The special screening will feature specially shot introductions and will be followed by a 10-minute featurette, The Day of The Doctor: Behind The Lens featuring Matt Smith, David Tennant and Jenna Coleman with Billie Piper and John Hurt, as well as lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat, who discuss their 50th Anniversary experiences.
The 3D screenings will be held in association with AMC Entertainment Inc, and Regal Entertainment Group – with tickets to go on sale Friday, October 25th at 9:30am ET for theater locations in eleven US cities: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Seattle, Washington DC, San Francisco, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta and Minneapolis.
